As Gen. Colin Powell later aptly summarized this military misadventure: "Beirut wasn't sensible and it never did serve a purpose. It was goofy from the beginning."

The fact that they quoted this complete affirmative action MORON tells you all you need to know about the piece.

This topic been previously posted at least twice before that I personally can recall.

It is likely that the OP has started a new thread on a topic that has been the feature of a new thread THREE previous times.

Isn't there a policy against this?

Did I say "all-out war?" That's the reason I used the quotations. If OBL was not a moron, then he certainly was not stupid enough to expect the US to take an isolationist route after a successful attack on NYC and the nation's capital.

Sending Marines to Lebanon for such an imprecise and unachievable end-state was a tremendous mistake. Reagan's decision to tacitly admit that it was a U.S. foreign-policy failure, and to then undertake corrective actions, was an admirable trait rarely seen in poilcymakers or presidents.

I have no problem with that.

In order to counter the images of coffins of US Marines killed in Beirut, Reagan needed images of Marines hitting the beaches:

Literally two days after the Beirut bombing Reagan had marines on the beach on Grenada

Are you seriously suggesting that within 48 hours of the suicide bombing in Beirut that the Marines were able to stage an amphibious assault?

Or perhaps, just perhaps, the invasion was already in the works at the time of the bombing?

Don't know but I remember being opposed to the humanitarian aid issued by Bush. Our military is not a pizza delivery service.

You were opposed to the Clintonian light bringing to the rest of the world where we were so committed we'd welcome Haitian refugees? I remember the breathless media coverage of the Marines landing in Somalia where they were basically tripping over cameramen.

I wouldn't mind the Navy delivering pizza inside 2k lbs shells from a ship like the USS Iowa.

No, OBL had no idea of the degree of Bush's response since he had no idea that Bush was not Clinton. He expected the US to go isolationist. Expecting all out war between the US/Israel v. Arabs is a moronic view and OBL was not a moron. The Arab states are not united and even if they were they would lose all out war.

Bin Laden specifically said was that he wanted to bankrupt us with a quagmire just as they did with the Russians.

On Grenada?

Yes.

Reagan needed a propaganda coup, and Grenada fit the bill. It's not complicated, but it is very effective.
