And if it is indeed commonly understood, why has any serious discussion of ending the Federal Reserve or returning to the Gold Standard been wholly verboten by the ruling political establishment of both parties since the election of 1980?
Ronald Reagan was indeed the last nominee of either party to make it a campaign issue. And it was DOA as a topic of serious discussion soon after Reagan entered the White House.

They won't shite on him, but the distancing is likely to start in 2022, not 2024. Plausible distance from Trump while not rejecting the policy legacy is worth a few points in a general election, and both badly want to be President.
