18% of GDP - $3.4 TRILLION - spent on healthcare

quote:LINK This article gets one essential issue right: basically, we need more and better "death panels" a la the British. It's outrageous to spend tens of thousands of dollars to keep a 94-year old with cancer and dementia alive for another 45 days. What the article misses is that, even for these elderly cases, the US still spends up to 2X more per procedure than the UK. IMO, we need to increase the supply of doctors and pay them less instead of supporting the current cartel which is limiting supply.
Last year, America’s total medical costs hit a new record of $3.4 trillion, according to the federal government. That’s about 18 percent of the country’s total GDP, meaning that one out of every six dollars we spent in 2016 went to health care. The national doctor bill dwarfs anything else we spend money on, including food, clothing, housing, or even our mighty military.
If that $3.4 trillion were spread equally throughout the population, the bill would come to some $10,350 for every man, woman and child in the country. But fortunately –for most of us, anyway—the cost of health care is not equally distributed. Rather, a small number of Americans run up most of the expense. The biggest medical costs are concentrated on a fairly small segment of the population—people with one or more chronic illnesses, plus victims of accidents or violent crime. The cost is so concentrated, in fact, that an estimated five percent of the population accounts for 50 percent of total medical costs.

Yes, we need to lower our standards so we can have more frickups providing subpar care. When they do frick up extra bad, we can have death panels cleaning up the mess. Good call.

You are right, here is an idea. In order to save money, we need to update abortion laws. Leftist, since they love murder, should be aborted after the 90th trimester

Yeah, let's go ahead and get rid of all three of those last pesky things.....

Everything you stated in this post makes me sick.

Prices, waste, and demand.
It is a simple explanation but its solutions are enormously complex given the political reality.
It is good you are taking this sort of approach, don't let reactionaries deter you. I would suggest though that end of life care is not exactly where you should look at the problem. At least not so narrowly focused.

Should we pay for welfare recipients to have 5 kids?

Jesus, can you only imagine if America implemented a socialized system for our old people?
Too scary to think about.

The crappy western diet is/has created a dia'obesity epidemic not only in this country, but one that is spreading worldwide.
When you go out into the public, look at all the lard-butts out there. Children, young adults, middle-age people with fat faces and ballooning waistlines who are so out-of-shape that they can barely walk up a flight of stairs without being winded.
We have 10 year old children who are type 2 diabetics, 25 year old men & women who are getting coronary bypasses. That used not be the norm. Something is badly wrong in our nation.
All the crappy processed food(junk), several McCrappy's in every town and city, foods loaded with tons of salt, preservatives, hormones and chemicals.
Our unhealthy lifestyle is going to break our medical/healthcare system.
What is the answer? IDK
On a personal level, our family eats healthy, gets exercise and try to have healthy attitude about life.
And the future prospects don't look too good for our nation as a whole.
Our nation needs a major paradigm shift when it comes to our unhealthy diets and lifestyles.

It's socialism, it kills people, what more do you need to know?
Whats that? Britains have a longer life expectancy then Americans? Must be fake news. We have less socialism, not possible.

Increased premiums for individuals over thirty who have never paid into the system
Incentives for healthier lifestyles
Cut out the bargaining aspects of healthcare.
Reduce regulations on drug testing and approvals.
Incentivize new technology and medications that minimize costs.
Basically all the bullshite we are spending on climate change should be invested in the medical industry.

You realize this would raise total costs right?

ncentives for healthier lifestyles
Explain? Like incentivizing people on Medicare and Medicaid for going to annual check ups since studies conclude it is cheaper to catch something early then late and prevent chronic conditions?

This would not in anyway bring costs down. Eliminate negotiating just incentivizes price gouging. Its basically giving monopoly power to a provider.

Again, needs more clarification.

quote:Yep. If diet was improved in easily known ways, it would be a major decrease in costs.
