I’m seeing some posts arguing that increasing the min wage will shut down small businesses

Increasing minimum wages in the short term destroys businesses and causes layoffs and price increases.

In the long term it causes inflation which hurts both the lower and middle classes by simultaneously decreasing the value of their saved assets and increasing their cost of living. This causes a calculated and vicious cycle that ensures ever increasing government dependence.

This also devalues jobs and businesses that cannot afford to raise their salaries and payrolls at whatever rate they increase the minimum wage.

Any perceived short term gain is drastically outweighed by long term pain.

If anything we should decrease the minimum wage and let the market figure it out.

The answer to the inflation problem is usually artificial government price controls, business tax increases, hiring mandates, and the FEDs money printing service.

This is economics 101 and a very easily explainable concept. It’s not biased.

If we had an honest and efficient media in this country they would explain this. Explain both sides of the issue and let people make their own decisions. In my opinion the biggest problem America currently faces is a hyper partisan and biased media.

"That's not how any of this works."

Just because you show up to your minimum wage job doesn't mean you are afforded all of the luxuries people feel are essentials.

People on minimum wage want:
New cars
$1k phone
High speed internet
Cable TV
Nice house/apt
Vacations

Want those things? Start at your minimum wage job and work your way up. Get a college degree. Go to a trade school. Work in construction. Make stuff and sell it on ebay/etsy, etc.

Our society as a whole is terribly entitled.

It's no use talking to these people. They have no clue what it takes and how much it costs to run a business. Also, they don't realize that many business owners BARELY pay themselves a 'living wage' when they first start off.

Why do the same people that say this... argue that increasing the minimum wage won't be inflationary.

Also... tat statement is as silly as saying "anyone that can't afford their living expenses shouldn't be alive." Applying your "logic" why should we have minimum wage? Just let people starve to death.

wow, coming from someone who has never been in business. What you do not understand is how raising it effects other salaries. Good paying jobs will have to raise their salaries based on % of the minimum wage. Teachers will only be making 1/3rd more than the kid at McDonalds. These numbers will be passed on to the consumer and we all will feel the sting.

So with no minimum wage, McDonald’s just profits from subsidized food and labor. The status quo doesn’t really make sense either.

This line of reasoning is incorrect.

In market economies, wage rates track very closely with the value of the product the worker produces. Food stamps and Medicaid have nothing to do with wage rates

Question for you: if the cost of producing your product goes up, what do you have to do to the price of your product?

All the posts here are just more rhetoric. Nobody bothered to read the link I sent. Even my friends with economic degrees agree with my link. I’m still waiting for evidence from y’all’s side...

If you don’t want $15 then fine, but to think min wage shouldn’t at least keep up with inflation is criminal and greedy IMO...

When and why did we invent this notion that working 40 hours per week at McDonald's means you should be able to afford an average house, car, and be able to take care of your wife and 2 kids?

Good luck in selling enough 20 dollar Big Mac’a to keep McDonald’s afloat... then you’ll have tens of thousands of lost jobs

You mean just at McDonalds right? We’d go into another depression so fast. Millions of lost jobs. I can tell this a-hole in OP is gonna vote to raise my taxes if they/them haven’t already

Sure is weird how, despite all kinds of economic situations over the last 10 years, inflation has remained basically flat...
