Read this column by a "literacy specialist". Talk about bad writing.

Consistently starts sentences with prepositional phrases. He uses sentence fragments. The word "you" is used. There are more.

I can't get passed the second sentence and the unnecessary use of "In fact". That's some second grade shite right there.

You understand that only idiots believe in grammar rules like don't use you or start a sentence with a prepositional phrase.

Only the mediocre writers are given hard and fast rules like that.

That is an awful article, but if it is meant for Mississippians and those educated in the state, maybe the writer is writing for his audience and trying to dumb it down.

I wish someone would tell me how successful common core will be implemented in that school district.

As a poor writer, I was expecting his errors to be relatively unnoticeable. I figured this was a chance for better writers to point out minor flaws (e.g., split infinitives). You were correct though; there were noticeable fragments and other flaws that may be forgivable in a post here but not in this type of article. I think he inadvertently proved his point though.

Maybe a better writer can correct me, but these appear to be two fragments. Ironically, this is related to his discussion about writing prompts.

quote:

For two of the passages, six questions and a writing prompt. For the last two, six shared questions and a writing prompt.

You are correct. Those "sentences" lack verbs.

The second person should rarely - if at all - be used in any type of "formal" piece of writing. This is one of my pet peeves.

Just glancing through the column, here are a couple more glaring problems. (There are many more.):

quote:

Though I recall being frustrated both as a teacher and student with the MS SATP English II Exam.

This is a dependent clause, not a sentence.

quote:

That is not to say that the parents of his peers in Greenwood did not do a good job. Furthermore, that does not mean that teachers in Greenwood did not do a good job.

Double negative hell...

quote:

The Common Core Standards is the first step in giving Kamron an equal footing in the world.

Plural noun - meet singular verb.

In most cases, I would agree. However, exceptions do exist. The use of the second person (like the use of the first person) depends on the intended audience, context, and cultural expectations.

The choppiness is the style preferred by editors. When I wrote for the college newspaper, I was told to write one to two sentence paragraphs.
