Who are your starting 8 with a Rghty and Lefty starter a set up man and a closer? You can pick from all time also.
Mine is as follows....
1B Gehrig
2B Morgan
SS Ripken, Jr
3B Schmidt
LF Bonds
CF Mays
RF Ruth
C Bench
DH Mantle
RHP Cy Young
LHP Spahn
Setup Rivera
Closer Hoffman
ETA:
If I was going to have utility player it would be Gibson. He was best athlete playing baseball in the 60's by some accounts.

You do know Rivera is considered the greatest set up man in history of the game? The Yankees were 70-3 the two years he and Wettland were in Set up Closer role.

Other than Gehrig, your infield is weak.

Might as well make Wetteland the closer then

Why so? You can shoot my lineup down all you want, but you dont provide alternatives or reasoning why mine is bad or "weak".
There really are no wrong lineups either, just personal opinions on this topic.

I think what Hoffman did for San Diego was more impressive than what Wagner did for Houston. Wagner had more elctric stuff but if I am using Mariano as a set up with a hard cutter I would want to come back with Hoffman with his change and Curve.

4,256 reasons I'd have Pete Rose in that lineup.

Are we going for brief dominance or long term consistency? If just short term, I think your leftie has to be Koufax

batters hit .211 career off Hoffman
.187 vs Wags
Hoffman was great but he's slightly overrated

Jeter is the greatest SS so shouldn't he be there. That's what I've been seeing anyways...

Just using today's players would look like this IMO:
1B- Paul Goldschmidt
2B- Dustin Pedroia
3B- Manny Machado
C- Buster Posey
SS- Troy Tulowitzki
LF- Mike Trout
CF- Andrew McCutchen
RF- Bryce Harper
DH- Miguel Cabrera
RHP- Jose Fernandez
LHP- Clayton Kershaw
I think the last time the game had this many stars in it was the mid 90s. Most of the guys listed are under 30 too. MLB is in good shape.

my ultimate starting roster with options would probably be something along the lines of
C - Johnny Bench
1B - Lou Gehrig
2B - Rogers Hornsby
SS - Honus Wagner
3B - Mike Schmidt
LF - Ted Williams
CF - Willie Mays
RF - Hank Aaron
DH - Ty Cobb (no power but theres enough in lineup)
UT - Babe Ruth (Pitcher and Fielder)
LHP - Randy Johnson
RHP - Walter Johnson
Set Up - Dennis Eckersley
C - Mariano Riviera
P - Christy Mathewson (could go so many different ways with an extra pitcher)
It's hard to leave people like Jimmie Fox, Mickey Mantle, Tris Speaker, Stan Musial, Cy Young, Sandy Koufax, etc... off but this is my line up

He's also the best closer in the history of the game.
Debatable. I know he has the saves record, but that doesnt mean he is the best.
