Weekend Dining Adventures in NOLA-updated
Posted on 11/4/13 at 9:56 am

Work in progress.
ETA:
Went to Mariza Friday for my first time. Place has a very comfortable feel. It was packed around 8:00, they don't take reservations but were seated in 10-15 minutes. Had a few cocktail to start the night which were all skillfully prepared.
Food: Red Snapper Crudo, was an excellent start of the meal. It was a thin sliced and served with a nice olive oil, cucumber and mint. Very refreshing.
SO and I, split everything.
Short Rib Rigatoni had a delicious beef broth that had a great earthy flavor. The only complaint was we only received 3 small portions of the Short Rib which was excellent.
Black linguine with shrimp and crab. This was the SO's favorite. It had a pesto style sauce that was light and flavorful. I'm glad we tried this one over the Guanciale pasta, would have been too heavy for one meal.
Lastly, we split the lamb belly w/ polenta. The dish was great, I could eat the polenta with that sauce every day.
All this food, and 2 glasses of wine were under $70.
Great spot that all should try.
Sleeper meal of the year at Canal St Bistro(Dia la muerte menu)
Also my first time at this Mid City hidden jewel.
Started with a unique Margarita the chef created. It had more citrus then usual and I enjoyed it.
Ordered the queso fundito which is served with chorizo. It's excellent, greasy but you will not be disappointed. It comes with homemade corn torillas that are delicous.
Then we ordered two special off the menu.
The Venison Chop served with the Chef's mole sauce was truly exceptional. This cuisine is constantly bashed in NOLA(by me on occasion)
but this was eye opening. The Chop was perfectly cooked and the mole was to die for. I actually received the last dish and the chef came out after and said I was eating his dish. Chef Guillermo was very nice and interesting to talk to. He rolled his tequila cart over and sat with our group at the end of the night.
My uncle had a fish dish that escapes me. He enjoyed it, but the venison dish was clearly the star. I must say this was one of the best meal's I've had this year. Possibly my moderate expectations were so exceeded is leading me to exaggerate some.
In my opinoin, if you're craving authentic Mexican food, you must try this place. The menu is constantly changing, as he has a strong German influence as well. Check them out soon.

Good stuff, but the suspense for the Milkfish review is killing me. Also will there be any pics added?

I love queso fundido with chorizo. So rich, but lots of flavor.
Nice reviews. Thanks

Nah, just didnt' think about it.
I never see or hear anyone mention Canal City Bistro, anyone on here ever been?
The Chef was at Taquero's on St. Charles but has been on Canal St. for several years.
For a town with very limited Mexican/Latin options, it's a secret kept too well.

Heading down there in a month. Sounds like I'll be checking out Mariza.

I've been to Canal Street Bistro twice, and each time was great. Brought the family and kids loved it as well. The chef/owner came out and chatted with us for a while and talked to my nine yr old about lamb chops (his favorite dish). Great place and as you said, exceeds expectations. I need to get back there.

Sorry no pics this time. Will try to remedy as both places will receive return visits soon.
I'll add a quick review of Milkfish from Sunday post Saints loss.
Walked over to A Mano after the game with a bottle of wine. The popup is a BYOB which is very nice. The staff was very accomodating of our pace(I eat slow).
When we walked in, it was nearly empty. I forgot we were eating mid-meal about 3:45. They were glad to seat us and our waiter was knowledgable and helpful.
We started with the app sampler consisting of:
Lumpia-Ground Pork Rolled with fresh garlic & ginger $6
Lumpia Shanghai-Filipino style eggrolls, sautéed Vegetables & Pork $ 7
Marinated Chicken Skewers-Filipino style BBQ Chicken on skewers, served in lettuce wrap with pineapple relish and steamed Rice $ 8
Lechon Kawali- Marinated Pork Belly, fried crisp and served with Citrus & Garlic sauce $8
The sampler cost $15, the price showing is a la carte price.
It was fantastic, they came with 3 "sauces" a soy based, a citrus garlic "ketchup", and a vinegar sauce.
The 2 lumpia rolls were delicious, fried and rolled like little cigars.
The fried porkbelly was superb, very similar to cracklin and paired perfectly with both the soy and ketchup sauces.
Entree's:
I had, Sisig (spicy)
Pork Face & Chicken Liver sautéed with Garlic, Onion & Chili’s with Garlic Rice, Grilled Lime and a Sunny egg 12
No egg for me.
SO had
Pinakbet
Pork and Shrimp stewed with Bitter Melon, Eggplant, Okra, Longbeans, Bok Choy, Daikon and Bagoong served over Steamed Rice 14
Both dishes were great, my dish required some patience. The texture was interesting with the softer liver and cripsy face meat.
Everything was flavorful and cooked perfectly.
The whole bill was $44 which I gladly tipped excessively for our superb service.
We discussed the future after the meal. Next Sunday is the last week in A Mano, heading to La Boca temporarily. They said a permanent spot is in the works. A couple of options Uptown I believe our be reviewed.
If you're up for a little culinary adventure on a Sunday, check them out. Plenty of food at a reasonable price.

I just saw Milkfish mentioned hereand decided I wanted to go. Your review furthered that desire.

Excellent, I think Milkfish is one of the more adventurous places in town.
Not sure if I mentioned it before, but they were BYOB. Check but take advantage of that.
Also, I was told a week or two ago that La Boca moved into A Mano's old home(second hand info). I'm not sure where Milkfish is operating at the moment.

This was to have more space.
I would call to make sure, but post their answer. This might have been some fool spouting off about their move.
R2R heard the same thing, but I've not seen it mentioned elsewhere.

I was at La Boca last Friday night. It was in the regular location and no one mentioned an impending move.

That's good enough for me.

They'd be crazy to leave that space. Part of what is awesome about LA Boca is the intimacy, the brick walls, the beams, etc...Plus I bet the rent there is much less than a Mano location.
