Watched "Like Water" the other day (documentary on the greatest fighter alive, Anderson Silva) and it was really good. Got me wondering what some other great sports documentaries there are out there....other than the 30 for 30 ones.

So what's y'alls favorite sports doc? Or a good one to recommend.....

If we're excluding 30 for 30's, I'll go with: When it Was a Game

Used fan-made home movies to give a portrait of Major League Baseball from the the 30's-50's. First chance most of us got a chance to see golden aged baseball stars in living color, looking like actual human beings instead of the stiff black & white portraits you usually see.

This was going to be my answer. It's an awesome movie, and an enlightening look into the everyday lives of people with disabilities. I LOL'ed at the part when one of the guys talks about people constantly asking him if he needs help, such ad getting back in the car leaving the grocery store. He said he always thought, "why would I come to the store if I couldn't get back in the car?"

Excluding the 30 for 30s, A League of Ordinary Gentlemen is the only sports doc I can think of seeing.

It's about pro bowling when it was about to go under and came under new management. It follows Pete Weber around a lot. Dude is a character.

Go Tigers the documentary about the Massillon Tigers is my favorite non 30 for 30 or ESPN documentary. Of the 30 for 30s I enjoyed The U, The Best That Never Was, and Once Brothers the most.

Aside from several 30 for 30's, the HBO Sports documentary on the 1980 US Hockey Team "Do You Believe in Miracles?" is fantastic.

Hoop Dreams is a common answer but it really is a great movie. When We Were Kings is a nice boxing documentary. Me and cocomo have debated this a number of times but I thought Tyson was a big waste of time. Nothing that you don't already know about him. If you're a true baseball fan Ken Burns - Baseball is a must watch. It is long, but I just watched it when I could and it took me a while to finish every episode but it is awesome.

I saw a really good documentary on the 1951 San Fransisco Dons fotbll team.

quote:

the 1951 Dons entered college football lore by fielding a team that would go undefeated and produce three NFL hall of famers (Gino Marchetti, Ollie Matson, and Bob St. Clair). However, they did not receive any bowl invitations, as the team turned down any suggestions that they leave their two black teammates at home at the expense of a much-needed bowl bid. Due to the associated financial burden on the school that a bowl bid would have alleviated, USF's finest football team ever was to be its last
