Distilling down Les Miles

A co-worker of mine, who is from Big 10 country and pulls for a Big 10 school, asked me a couple months ago if I had accepted Les Miles as LSU's coach, pointing out his record to date at LSU. I told him that he was growing on me, but there was something about him I couldn't quite figure out, and perhaps accept. He said, laughing, "what, growing on you?, the guy wins". I acknowledged this, but said I didn't like his style of play, this "inch worm" football, "you know, 3 yards, then 2 yards, with rarely a pass". It can be effective, but it's boring and ugly to watch, I said.
He said, "you mean, Big 10 football". I said, I suppose. I then reiterated my dislike for his near complete abandonment of the forward pass, despite so many receiving weapons on the roster.
Fast forward to today and distilling it down
Les Miles' system works, most of the time; this I understand. And you cannot really argue with his record, it's phenomenal. But despite his apparent affable, family oriented-nature and other character attributes that aren't entirely necessary for the job but nice when the coach that represents your school has them, something has never sat well with me about Les Miles. And just after the Georgia game, some ideas began to crystallize into theories, I suppose.
There are three:
a) he doesn't see the QB position in the modern-day-offense sense; a "Schembechler" protege as so many people like to point out. (By the way, Schembechler was a very good coach, but not great -- he never won a national championship and his teams usually lost their bowl games) This may help explain Miles' incredible reluctance to play any backup QB beyond the speculated personal issues between Miles and Lee. So, perhaps Les Miles sees the QB position as a COORDINATOR of the offense, not the CAPTAIN on the field.
b) Clock Management Follies of prior seasons, and now the Bama-BCS Debacle, where we witnessed a do- or-die, fans, school, state, and coonasses-be-damned attitude; he was going to win or lose it his way; and no, he would not entertain ideas to change course, such as go to the air -- football's not played in the air, it's played on the hard grounds of the cold mid-western plains. Stubborn, personal IDIOSYNCRASIES that render him purblind to the reality around him.
c) The JL story. The statements from Miles that led you to believe this kid was getting a fair shake and would see prime playing time. Barring a story that would explain (and justify) Miles' handling of JL, in this he has completely lost my confidence and respect. And this ties into the above points: he'd put HIS "principles" (whatever the heck they are) ahead of the best interest of the team, the school, the fans., and yes, I'll say it, THE STATE because we LSU fans are a very proud bunch.
So, I guess what I am saying is, when I visualize his name it looks like this:
*Les Miles

Fair enough. It does seem that Les always has a way of good-great minus. Minus something. Stats, records, even firsts - he does great things that make it easy to defend him, but accompanying them is always some falter that raises doubt. I had hoped this season would destroy that trend, but 1/9 gave it continued life.

I think your assesment is spot on, especially the above.

I don't know if it's necessarily Big 10 football as much as it's maybe 1950's-60's football.
I think he wants to physically dominate the teams he plays by pounding, pounding and pounding until they wear down.
Which is fine until you come up against a team that you can't pound on that particular day.
Running football can be exciting football (for me) when it has a healthy dose of option, misdirection, etc. Makes you watch the intricacies of the movement of the linemen to appreciate it.
But I don't think that's quite the running game Miles uses.

Great assessment. I feel the same way. I was ready to finally go all with him but that last game just killed that. You are exactly right, he is just to stubborn.

A agree with everthing you said. I never have liked his style and for sure didn't like his game plan. Pathetic for the money he is paid. I love LSU and I think about what could have been and the effect on recruiting. Will he ever get better as a head coach? He is behind the times!

You can't be serious.
Look at the schedule we had this year. We went 13-0 up to the BCS NG and stepped on every team in our way with the exception of 1.
What happened on Jan. 9 has been discussed here a million times so I'm not going to rehash it.
How else can he get better? Don't tell me you're one of those "fans" that want him to get every #1 recruit, win every game by at least 50 points, with the NC every year.....
Are you one of those? Or can you move on from Jan. 9 and get behind him, his staff, the players and the university and not quibble with the way he gets results or his little quirks?

Definetly Big 10 football with quicker players. You are spot on and he cant see it.

You guys are going to give JL a win for the Bama game? Thank God Miles had the balls to pull him. If he didn't, LSU would have been SEC West runner ups. I like Lee, but he was not going to win on 11/5 and I hope most people realize this.

How about respect what LSU done this year instead of comparing our offense to "Big 10" football?
An SEC team was the ONLY team that had a chance in hell of beating us.
And if you had this "enlightement" after the Georgia game, why is it just now that you had the "idea" to post it?
