Can they be relied on instead of a handheld if it's a good app? For some reason I don't think I can trust my smart phone as a gps even though it says it can run on gps without cell service. Does anyone use just their phone?

I have the cabela's hunt app. Where we hunt we have no cell service 80% of the time and the app GPS's all over. Pretty decent app for the maps.

Motion X GPS on Iphone is pretty good if you have a clear sight to the sky.

Use it when I'm looking for ponds, when I'm in the marsh. Actually got a little turned around in the woods today and it got me out.

Google maps has been able to pinpoint me fairly accurate when I'm in the woods.

The overhead view of the property and my trusty compass is all I use.

From my understanding Google maps uses cell and cant be used solely on gps. I need something that can use gps only. I'm in places with no service pretty often.

I have Garmin on my iPhone 4s. Better than handheld because the updates are automatic

If you go into the Android Market you can download My Tracks, it doesn't need service. Its pretty good for hiking and stuff as it tracks your movements

I use gaia gps app. You can download the mytopo.com map of an area to your phone ahead of time to use without cell service. The phone gps is pretty accurate.

Bump

Do you need good cell service to work? I have a iPhone 3GS and not sure if it will work.

We use an app called GPS Kit on our Iphones. Has been great. You can use a variety of maps for your locations and real time tracks. I use mostly Bing satellite, but Google satellite and terrain are good as well. The squawk funtion is pretty good for tracking animals as well as knowing where other members of your club are.

I think its an excellent app.
