Meh, they swan into our line. Nothing we can do about that.
People are goo goo about these things down here. They are everywhere offshore. Had no idea what it was. My initial thought was that it was a big ray.
Ive done a lot of fishing near shore here. Lots and lots. Never had them run into our drop lines.
Good day today with small snapper and eating fish. Current was ripping. Red grouper was good at slack tide but the gags just didnt bite today. I think the current was too strong for them. Back out Sunday.

I had a friend on the boat catch one inshore about a year ago. You talk about pull/swim hard. We netted it, grabbed the head while holding it down, and got the hook out to release it.
Odd thing was we saw it swimming around us before hooking it.

People are goo goo about them in SC too. Regulations to turn off lights, a huge volunteer org to protect the nests and whatnot, all because they are threatened. But these turtles migrate all the way to Africa and back. And the Africans eat them. All the work we do to protect them in the US is basically just to farm them for the Africans to harvest.

They are notorious for getting in on yellowtail snapper chumming. The first time I ever went chumming for yellow tail I hooked one within 5 minutes. I guy I barely knew had invited me to fish with him and a regular fishing buddy of his boat and I just knew I would never be invited back. After it happened to them as well I knew I was probably OK.
I also just cut the line as close as possible. I can't imagine trying to unhook one and would assume the damage done to the turtle and me is far worse than the hook rusting out in a month or so. If they swallow the hook they probably ain't surviving anyway....all of them I have ever hooked yellowtailing were hooked in the mouth with circle hooks. I suspect it may be illegal in the US to hook one no matter the circumstances. I can't imagine it not being an issue trying to remove a hook from one and certainly not hauling one to a vet....

Its not illegal to accidentally hook something protected/out of season that you weren't intentionally targeting. People hook them pretty regularly here off the Pcola pier. If someone hooks one, they just report it to the pier employees who will roll up on a golf cart with all the tools to safely bring it up and unhook it and lower it back down, unless it needs some medical care.

That makes sense. I suspect in the case of being hooked in the mouth area the turtle is non the worse for wear with that sort of attention. I like seeing them I just don't like seeing them in a chum slick LOL....
