i have been wanting to start catching some catfish and was wondering for fresh water canal fishing

whats the better option, 10-15 yo yo, or 10-15 hook trot line, or several short 5-6 hook mini trot lines?

i would like to average 10-12 catfish caught per trip

youre going to want to set deep water Trot Lines, use cut brim and have 25-35 hook set ups

Well you are setting some pretty specific goals.

You need limbs to hang yo-yos from, unless you are going to use poles. Put out 2 dozen yo-yos and about 50 hooks on trotlines and see what happens. you might catch 1. you might catch 50.

Get some slat traps. $50 each. I catch up to 25 in each trap. Averaging about 1.5# each. It catches the eating size fish, not the big ones.

Cans are fun to run around this time of year and on a bit or so too. You could do well setting shiners 2” deep right now on yo yos, pending there are sacalait. I like limb lines with live bream for catfish. Trot lines are always fun to run as well. Be prepared for garfish too. Always carry a knife that you can grab quickly messing with any of this. If you know there’s big fish where you plan to go, a galf is handy (keep the hook protected). Good luck.

thanks guys, its obvious im a noob at this stuff, im trying to supplement my grocery expenses with some fresh catfish and i have much more free time then money

as for specific amounts im trying to not put out too many hooks and fill up the boat with fish, and likewise i dont want too few and its barely worth the gas to go.

the 3 canals near me i have in mind to fish are 30 ish feet deep in the middle and filled with thick layers of black muck on the bottom about 10 feet thick so i think it kinda limits me to setting stuff parallel to bank

Pool noodles/jug lines are what I always go to. I'll throw 10 out in a canal off the intracoastal, go fish for about 2-3 hrs. and then come back to pick them up. Usually well over 50% of them will have catfish. I just bait with anything I find freezer burnt in the back of my freezer.
