I get invited to several clay shoots a year through work and would like a decent one to get better at it without spending $2500 on a Browning Citori..

LINK
Academy Link.
I have had a Yildiz 12 gauge for 20 or so years.
I love it and have shot everything from dove and snipe to turkey.
Personally, I think I am more accurate shooting the Yildiz over any other shotgun I own.
Not at all expensive compared to other brands.
I am sure we have some OB brothers on here with much more experience shooting O/U's.
Hope all going well, Bama.

Yessir, all good in the Gump.
I really like the feel of the Tristar ST. You guys know how some guns just "feel good" and it has great reviews.

I have a 20 ga yildiz o/u, it's a great little gun that I don't mind getting a little beat up.

I’ve been in your shoes before. If you buy a $700 entry level O/U , you’re gonna be handicapped from the beginning at each shooting station. A Tri-Star or Yildiz can only take you so far since the machining, fitting/assembly, and tolerances are crude compared to $3000+ shotguns.
I would go to 3-4 local shooting clubs in your area. Ask for the club president or someone who puts on the shooting events. Introduce yourself and explain your situation. See if they have a bulletin board where members advertise guns they’re selling. Most dedicated shooters are always looking to upgrade and sell their current O/U.
You’d be ahead of the game and have tons of confidence with a like new, used Beretta 686, Silver Pigeon, Browning Citori, 725, etc.. purchased for $1200-$1500.
Just my opinion as I bought a used 725 that was priced in my spending budget

If you don’t want a Turkish made gun, both the Franchi Instinct and F.A.I.R SLX 600 are italian made and retail for around $1500. If you want a true sporting clays gun with 30 or 32” barrels they will be more. But you’d probably be happier with a field gun with 28” barrels that is a little more versatile anyway.

Unfortunately for you, the answer to your problem is likely an auto rather than a budget o/u. That's not to say that a budget o/u won't work if that's absolutely what you need or want. But a new or used B gun auto would be a better gun for most. Less costly, less weight, less recoil, parts everywhere, adjustable stocks, and you'll probably shoot it better. Just something to consider. Also, don't fret over your decision -- the Indian always trumps the arrow, especially when it comes to shooting a shotgun.

Browning cynergy cx can be found for about 1700$ I was in the same boat as you and couldn’t decide if I wanted to go all in on a citori or not and bought the cynergy.
I ended up buying my son a citori 725 for his college graduation present and while it’s nicer wood wise I can’t tell the difference in shootability of the two.
