Wood boat on Ponchartrain

Greetings,
I am considering a vintage Chris Craft or Century. Not a show boat, just a runner that we can have a little fun with, maybe fish off the back for an hour or take an evening cruise.
Am I nuts for putting this on Ponchartrain? I've seen one of the editors of Woody Boat magazine uses his showpiece in straight saltwater, and my intent is really only Ponchartrain, Maurepas, and Borgne.

If your concern is with saltwater exposure; no need to fret. Lake P. is pure freshwater now a days. maybe a hint of salinity now and again; but for most part it should be stricken as "brackish". It is a freshwater body of water now.

Do you have a slip to keep the boat in the water?

I have nothing to add other than I am jealous. I would love to own an old wood Chris Craft. When completely restored they are absolutely gorgeous boats.

Make sure the hull is not jeopardized in any way. Look for soft spots, worm holes, waterlines in the side which could indicate a waterlogged hull.
Otherwise, if in good shape, I suggest keeping it on a lift.
Wooden boats are classic and require maintenance but don’t have to require any more maintenance than other hulls.

Back in the early 70's I was fresh out of high school and left home in N.O. to head to Jackson, MS to live and work at a marina on the Ross Barnet Reservoir.
One of my favorite jobs while there was refinishing the transom and decking of an old mahogany Chris Craft. That was one beautiful boat when all was said and done. That big inboard motor rumbled when it came to life and got that boat up to a plane in no time at all.
I'd love to have one, but in reality boats are little more than a hole in the ground you pour money into.

Dude... Madisonville has an entire museum dedicated to Wooden Boats in the Pontchartrain Basin... And a festival every year for it...
You'll be fine!

My BIL rebuilt a chris craft years ago and made the trip from Slidell to Madisonville every boat fest. Unfortunately, Katrina took it from his camp off the Jordan River. Never found it.

You would be better off keeping it in the water during spring/summer and only removing it when it will be sitting a long time.
It is the dry/wet cycles that destroy them and if dry they will leak pretty good until they swell and the seams are tight once wet.

My Dad had a smaller Chris Craft inboard in the early 60's we fished Lake P, Shell Beach and Empire for many years.
Was mahogany and a heavy s.o.b. He refinished it when my brother and me were teenagers, to this day I hate hand sanding wood with a passion.

I've been in love with them since I was a kid. My father was a national champion slalom and kite skier in the 70's and learned to ski from a Chris Craft.
