Black bears can be brown, but are not brown bears. Kinda weird. We have them in black, cinnamon, and glacier (blue/gray)

Visiting a friend in new Mexico last summer, he showed me a trashcan his neighbor built. It was a 4'x4' steel box not sure of thickness looked to be about 3/8. A bear had ripped up the lid to get to the trash.
Amazing strength an that was a black bear.
We have some pretty strict laws and bear proof containers. I haven't found the bear proof containers to be quite bear proof. We have both black and brown bears.

I saw a white bear on the Kenai last summer. By it's size and habitat I figured it was a black bear. Very neat

Holy cow. That would top anything I have ever seen though glacier bears are pretty cool. Goes to show you color isn't the only way, or the best way to judge the type of bear.

I only had a short look at it from a helicopter, but man was that neat. That was the only other color phase I saw. Gotta love AK

This is what happens when you have a wiener dog.

Maybe the bear liked weiners.

Bears dislike little yap dogs. A friend of mine has had hers jumped several times this year. One of the rules of the trail is not to take dogs with you. People ignore this "rule" more than any other.

Seems like a keeper.

Didn't know this. I figured a dog could help alert of a bear. Maybe a hound could not sure if wieners can smell that good.

Its probably not so much as the initial alert.
Its the fact that these little dogs don't know when they are way out of their league and shut the frick up....

Let the bear fight the wiener and make a getaway. Don't have to be faster than a bear just faster than a wiener.

Noooo...in fact, a dog will aggravate the hell out of a bear. For some reason, those little ones more than the larger ones. Bears have poor eyesight and probably can tell more about the larger ones than the smaller ones.

What an interesting story.
I think I would react without much thought as well, and go after the bear if it were attacking my dog. Although my dog is a lot more intimidating than a weenie dog.
Glad it was a good ending.

I think most of us would have done something, I don't know if punching would have been my first option. Rocks and limbs would have been my first option I believe.
Used to be a lone wolf out near the Mendenhall Glacier the locals named Romeo who would grab yap dogs and play with them. It freaked quite a few folks out who didn't know his intentions

Another cool story.
Poor guy just wants a friend.
And yeah, not sure if punching that bear would be my initial reaction, just depends where it would take place I guess! I don't think I pack a very hard punch anyway

We did see a cinnamon Black Bear along the side of the Cassiar Hwy eating clover.
He was the best looking bear of the trip IMO.
BTW I checked the photo thread for pictures I missed while we were gone and saw your post about Haines. We barely missed being there at the same time since we left on the early morning ferry to Skagway the day the State Fair started. We didn't want any part of the crowds that would result though the locals all seemed to really like the fair and thought we were stupid for leaving. The weather in your pictures is a lot better than we ever saw in Haines. I loved the bears and eagles at the Chilkoot River and in good weather Haines has to be an outstanding place.
