This is one of those things you really don't want to have to make a choice about doing, or not doing. Would you?

Black bears in residential neighborhoods aren’t exactly unheard of in Juneau. While many people stay inside when bears are about, one local woman says she had a different instinct when she saw her dog was in trouble.
It started out as a typical evening for 22-year-old Brooke Collins. She let her dogs out as usual but this time, she said there was a black bear outside who took hold of her dachshund Fudge. She said she feared for her pet’s life and, in an instant, ran over and punched the bear right in the face to make it let go.
“It was all so fast. All I could think about was my dog was going to die,” said Collins.
“It was a stupid thing but I couldn’t help it,” she said. “I know you’re not supposed to do that but I didn’t want my dog to be killed.”

The boyfriend better take heed, I wouldn’t want her mad at me in any way what so ever.

When adrenaline kicks in I guess you lose track of what you are doing. Good story but she was lucky the bear didn't really want to fight.

Probably a 50/50 chance it wouldn't attack. Pretty small odds IMO. The old theory that you fight a black bear, and play dead with a brown bear may just be true.

50/50 not great odds.
And IWHI also. Just don't mess with her dog.

Agree, but I'm pretty sure you're supposed to stand up and fight a black bear, but a grizzly you play dead (and hope it's not hungry.)

That's pretty much the wisdom that has been passed around to outdoorsmen throughout the ages. It's my guess that this theory really hasn't been tested (successfully) very many times, with many witnesses to verify the integrity.

Possibly, but it may be myth as well. Two people were hiking in Kluane (Yukon, BC) north of here years ago, and the woman was on her period, both were killed and eaten. My guess is the number of people who were not on their period, and attacked by bears is much greater than the reverse.
Tests have shown this could be the case, but I don't think in the wild it has proven to be much of a factor.

I imagine this would be the case...in all seriousness, my mom and her bf stayed at a cabin in TN two months ago, a brown bear kept coming on the porch, her bf opened the window and sprayed it in the face with a fire extinguisher...they took pics of this

There are some great books about bear attacks and one of them convinced my ex wife to never go hiking again, since some detail local events. I would guess 75% or more of bear "charges" are bluffs and most close encounters end up just fine. There are the rare story that tell you however, that it takes just one pissed off/protective/hungry bear to become that rare statistic. We have bears breaking into homes on a regular basis.

Visiting a friend in new Mexico last summer, he showed me a trashcan his neighbor built. It was a 4'x4' steel box not sure of thickness looked to be about 3/8. A bear had ripped up the lid to get to the trash.
Amazing strength an that was a black bear.
