I pass hogs every morning and every night driving through a WMA. Am I reading this right, that you can only hunt them during a season for something else? Is there some other info somewhere that I am missing?

That is correct, so if squirrel is open you can shoot them with .22 or .17

We have a problem with these hogs and they tie your hands behind your back when you want to take a few out. What an awful rule.

Pretty sure the spring squirrel season this year is May 4-26. So, this weekend till the last of this month.

I could pull over on I-10 and whack them easily 2x a day. I see several different groups coming and going to work. I am sure there are more hanging in the woods just out of sight based on the the different ones I see every day.

Yes, and you can only hunt with weapons legal for whatever season is open on a WMA and be properly licensed for that season (ie. having a big game license, deer tags, archery license if you plan to use deer season to hunt hogs with a bow, buckshot or .308)

Agreed. I'm curious what the logic behind it is? Are they worried that some baw that's hog hunting with his AR might poach a deer out of season if the opportunity presented itself? Or that if they allow year round open season on hogs on the WMA's that the local deer herd would never get a break because there'd be hunting pressure year round?

I think the idea behind it is to let non-hunter the opportunity to use the WMA without the worry of coming across a hunter or getting shot.

I think both of these are a factor, but also that there is an increase in recreational campers, hikers, etc during off season times. They may be worried about safety. Having 10 baws out there driving with ARs onto a camper taking a shite in the woods wouldn't look good.

because of the long history of poaching in LA, that's why...

if they'd limit it to daylight rimfire.. i'd be fine with that.. or trapping....

just curious where you're seeing them

I travel on I-49 several times per week and see pigs occasionally around MM48 (between the 2 Bunkie exits)

It has been proven time and again that hog populations are NOT affected by hunting or even recreational trapping. Only intensive, professional trapping and persistent nighttime harvest even make a dent in the population. Louisiana is a state that will always have hogs so your argument really holds little water.

The reason it is prohibited outside of active hunting seasons is that the manpower required to provide enforcement to ensure poaching is kept at bay during what would otherwise just be "hog season" doesn't exist in LA.

They should be paying $10 a hog all year round. The population would get under control real quick. Plus it would be better use of tax payer dollars then what they normally do with it.

if you get money for killing something, are you gonna go out and kill every one you see and try to eradicate them, or are you going to save some for seed for next year so you can get more money?

It’s like they think hunters can’t restrain themselves from shooting a deer if they have a legal deer rifle with them.

More like they know it. You realize how many people will even shoot a rifle off of a highway at those dummy deer? Unfortunate that so many people can’t resist.

You can hunt them year round in Ga but laws change as far as how you can hunt them based on the season. I’m pretty sure you can’t bait for them during turkey season and you can’t hunt them at night during deer season. But this is not for WMAs. Our WMAs are just as strict. You can’t shoot anything out of a bow, cross bow, or a spear.

I get that in your head this makes sense, but time after time this just doesn't work. The nutria population is an excellent local corollary. They offer a bounty but the population continues to thrive.

Hogs cannot be controlled via traditional game animal population measures due to their fecundity.

Add to that the fact that people actively trap and move them for hunting economy purposes and you have a nearly impossible problem to solve.

Missouri is actually handling their relatively new populations very well by making it illegal to hunt hogs on public lands altogether thereby de-incentivizing moving them to create new populations for guiding purposes.
