When we went, my parents went as well. We did the Going to the Sun Road the 1st day.

After a couple of the switchback curves where my dad was looking down a 1500ft cliff, he decided he had had enough. He was desperate to turn back.

The only thing between the car and bottom of the valley was a 15in tall rock barrier.

Beartooth is like that, but some sections don’t have barriers. I wanted to photograph sunset from the top, but when I got there I decided I wasn’t driving down that thing at night. Next time I’m gonna pack a sleeping bag and food, and just car camp up they to photograph sunset and sunrise

Beartooth was a great ride. Amazing how far you could see.

we are going to be at grand targhee in august and from there need to get to glacier NP in two days. I keep hearing about bear tooth being a don’t miss but it would be way out of our way; would wind up being a 9-10 hour day just to get 1/2 way to GNP. Is it worth some pain?

That tough. I always say if you’re close to such a place and may not get back for many years, then go.

We entered from the south side. There was a visitor center on the north side that was nice. Bring some seeds for the chipmunks.

That’s a tough one. If you do Beartooth you’ll go through Lamar Valley after going through Cooke City. August will be during the Bison Rut, so it could take you a few hours just to get from Cooke City to Gardiner, MT depending on bison jams.

If you decide to, I’d go through Cody, if it’s getting late stay in red lodge, and then get up early for bear tooth. If you have time, I’d do Cody to Bear tooth, stay in Cooke city after crossing the pass, then get up early for the rest of the drive.

Honestly though I’d consider a second trip for bear tooth. Being that you’re in a tight time schedule you won’t have time to really enjoy it.

Appreciate it

Our neighbor down the street moved back to West TN after several years of raising a family in Bozeman/Big Sky. She's been a huge help while planning this trip. Flying into Bozeman and driving down to Moran for 3 nights and then a night in or around Big Sky before driving back over to Bozeman to fly home. Staying at the Hatchet Resort which was suggested to me by Travel Board posters on here. I still have to book a place that first night between Livingston and Gardiner. I'll send you an email to discuss.

the other option is to bear down and get to glacier in a single day and have an extra day in the park

incredible photos BTW you are quite talented

Montana and Glacier National Park is my favorite place in the Continental USA.

JOJO those pictures are incredible. You really need to get to Montana.

When we were there the bear grass was blooming. Quite the sight looking down a valley and seeing it.

I haven't stayed at Hatchet, but there was a grizzly with her 3 yearlings hanging out around there a few weeks ago. I was never able to find her to get photos, but a few friends of mine did.

If you have time drive over Togwotee Pass (Hatchet is on the pass) and go to Dubois. The pass is a very pretty drive and pretty easy for a mountain pass. If the road to Brooks Lake is open take a ride down it. There are some stunning views around the lake.

As far as a place near Gardiner to stay, there is a Days inn in Cooke City, Montana that isn't bad. Nothing fancy, but clean and a good location. To get too it you'll drive through Lamar Valley, where you'll see lots of Bison, and possibly wolves, there area also a few moose that hang out around Cooke City.

I'm working on it. Just trying to decide if I want to include photos from different places I've been, or just keep it focused on one general area (if I did that it would likely be GTNP and Yellowstone.)

It's pretty rare that they will attack unprovoked. I never once felt threatened out there, but I'm also smart enough to keep a safe distance.

Are you alone when you are taking the grizzly photos? How far would you consider to be a safe distance from a grizzly bear? Do you carry a firearm or just bear spray. Kind of curious how you go about all that.

In Yellowstone and Grand Teton NP the park rules state that you have to be at least 100 yds away from bears. I try to follow the rules, but sometimes things happen and you end up closer.

For the grizzly shots I was not alone, there were several photographers around, along with wildlife management. The grizzly shots were also close to the roadside, so my jeep was pretty close in case I needed to get in.

When i'm hiking out there I carry bear spray, don't carry food (unless I'm gonna be out all day), and while I should make noise while hiking in order to avoid walking up on an unsuspecting bear, I tend to be quiet (i'm out photographing wildlife, so I don't want to scare anything off).

You can't carry a firearm in the parks, so that's not really an option (at least legally). I've read that bear spray is actually more effective than an gun in close counter aggressive bear attacks.

You can open carry a firearm in National Parks. You aren’t supposed to discharge them but it is legal to carry. Saw a guy carrying a 10mm Glock in a chest rig in Glacier and asked the park ranger about it. He said it is legal but supposedly you cannot discharge it under any circumstance even self defense. I’m sure the legal penalty would not be as bad as being mauled by a bear though.

Going to be traveling to Maine in a few weeks and was looking at things to do. They have a tour that carries you to Machias Seal Island. They have blinds set up and they drop you off and each group gets 1 hour in the blind photographing Atlantic puffins. It was already booked up but that would be a pretty cool trip. You ever looked into that?
