What lenses do you use?

600mm?

For wildlife I use the Nikkor 180-600mm or 200-500mm, landscapes the Nikkor 24-70mm, and the horse shots I used the Nikkor 70-200mm. I will occasionally swap things out, for example if I'm in the mountains and want dramatic shots of the peaks I'll use 180-600mm, and sometimes I'll use one of the lower range lenses for wildlife.

You're getting alot better. Two bits of unsolicited critique.

Both of these shots are great, but you could make them even better with some cropping/cloning due to outside intrusions distracting from the main subject. For the first one, I'd try to clone out the two blades of grass that come in from the bottom. The thing I like about that one are Red and Green and Orange and Blue are on opposite sides of the color wheel and complimentary to each other. Also, the orange/yellow spots on the swallowtail are mirrored in the size, color and shape of the flower. as I said, it's a good shot, but you could make it better with additional post processing.

Same thing on the second image with the bubbles or whatever that is on the left side of the frame. I'd try to clone it or content aware fill it out of there or maybe even a crop. Maybe try it in a 4x5 aspect (although nice subtle crop down from 2:3 to the 1.6:1 "golden" ratio".) The back lighting on that one is outstanding. Again, good job.

You really should invest in a 16-35mm. It makes all the difference in landscape shots. It gives you the "deep space" feel that you can't get with 24mm.

Thanks for the feedback, critiques are always a good thing.

I typically don't edit things out (such as the grass in the butterfly picture), because if I were to enter a photo into a "wildlife photography" contest it would be disqualified for removing the items. Most of the big wildlife/nature photography contest have very specific rules when it comes to photo editing, and the only thing you can usually do to remove an unwanted item is crop it, which in the case of the butterfly picture wouldn't work.

I could use the erase tool in lightroom, and then reduce the opacity, so that the grass is still somewhat visible, but then you never know how the judges will look at that.

Now for just posting and sharing photos i could easily remove items.

Nikon hasn't come out with a 16-35mm for the mirrorless cameras yet, but when they do it will be on my list.

I get it 100% and despite my comments/critique above, I do appreciate the ethic of keeping the image as original as possible. My comments were coming from a commercial point of view, not a contest point of view (although 99.9% of the people that would look at those images wouldn't recognize those things as an "issue".) I never did contests as I saw them as a cheap way to gain the rights to a bunch of photos, mostly from folks that are unaware of the consequence of submitting photos and not fully reading the terms and conditions of those contests. Some folks are willing to trade the exclusive rights to a photo for possible notoriety. I never really was.

Anyway, keep shooting man. I enjoy your shots.

Gotcha. My 16-35 f/2.8 Zeiss complete changed the way I took photos.

ETA: I'd love to see a high contrast B&W conversion of that first bee photo.

Are you using a north facing window for the horses or a soft strobe?

. The catch light in their eyes shows windows in a couple but what looks like outdoor dusk sky in the others.

Those were actually taken while photographing a barrel racing event. I was doing some candid shots before the races started, and there was an area in the arena that had a good combination of shadows and sunlight.

In post i decreased the exposure in the background, while slightly increasing it on the subject.

Are wildlife/nature photographers doing this? I genuinely had no idea. I try and do the bare minimum when editing my photos.

There are some VERY big name professional photographers who alter their photos all the time in post. It's done routinely.

You've got the only print of that duck. My external hard drive crashed and l lost the raw files and edits from from the beginning of this year to mid-May, along with the majority of everything I've taken since 2021.

I've been able to slowly recover some files, but the 2024 folder looks like it's gonna be a lost cause.
