It's not just federal land, it's a National Park.

It is not about shooting deer in the off season. I was told the purpose it to let the non hunting people get access to the public land without guns being present. I see your point, but that is what I was told.

Eh, yeah that makes sense. I guess in LA it's different than MS, because so many of our wmas are ghost towns after hunting season, especially the ones with swamps that hold alot of hogs, but yall's swamps are a little different than ours with a lot more recreational opportunities outside of hunting.

I guess when the cat is already out of the bag it doesn't matter, but I was glad to hear when mdwfp decided to open an off-season season for hogs on some areas that were hog infested, and some were even allowing dogs for a period of time. It seems to help a lot from what I was told. I was told by a gw that they're a lot more lax on certain areas where hogs are a problem regarding taking shots at pigs in the process of "coon hunting" in the summer since archery equipment is legal for small game.

The government will let hogs go unchecked all summer long as they decimate fawns, upland birds and habitat, because god forbid someone might shoot a doe when 99.99% have no interest.

This. The WMA I hunt is infested with hogs. Like most WMAs they split up the open seasons and zones. You can only kill them with whatever weapon is legal at that particular time and zone. For instance, when it's dove or turkey season you can only hunt them with shotgun and bird shot.

When the Warden told me this I just laughed at him and said call me when ya'll get serious about killing some pigs. What a joke.

Yep. On many wmas in MS archery equipment is legal for small game summer seasons, I know guys who go "coon hunting" with their bow.

I met an outfitter that runs his business out of South Florida. One of his biggest money makers is bagging a giant python. Says most of his customers are 50+ year old men.
He also offers a cast and blast package - catch peacock bass in the late morning, then go shoot iguanas with hi-power pellet guns.

My thoughts exactly. Now they have untrained people out there trying to make a couple of extra dollars, while the pythons just continue to devour the native animals.

even though government biologists estimate 70+% of fawns are eaten alive by hogs every warm season (they've become specialized in sniffing out fawns, hogs can smell them unlike native predators).

I already hated hogs.
Now I feel vindicated.

Louisiana needs a sportsman's organization with enough numbers to get the attention of politicians. That would mean a diverse organization that has several sections that include several different activities. Until all sportsmen unite and can put pressure of 50-100000 or more votes on the politicians nothing will get done. Sportsmen will never have enough money to fight the big lobby groups so it has to be done with numbers and votes.

Grew up hearing it referred to as a "brush hook" or "brush blade".

This was called a "sling blade", "ditch blade" or "wim-wam". Guess it was a redneck thing.

Yea, but then you'd have a pair of 5 ft snakes. That's no good.
