Its ok to shot at each other and try and kill someone, but don't use hollow points.
I don't get it, someone help me out.

B/c of the potential for maiming, at least thats what they always told us when I was active.

You might shoot the enemy too dead.

I've always wondered this. Never could find a good explanation except it's been law since the 1890s. Level playing field is what I'm guessing tho?

War Crimes Trials, after the conflict is over. Usually results in executions if its bad enough to go to trial

Because politicians wrote the treaty that banned them, not the soldiers.

I never understood a lot of it when I was active duty, besides the humane treatment of POWs I never got the rules thing. At the end of the day its war, but they want to make it as peaceful as possible.

So civillians will have the upper hand when we rebel.

So, shooting someone while engaged in combat with a hollowpoint resulting in a sever injury is "illegal" but taking an innocent civilian hostage and beheading them on film is "part of war"?

No, both of them are illegal. Are you implying that we should ignore international treaties in order to stoop to the level of terrorists?

I personally think we should take the gloves off and fight wars to win stop wasting our young mens' lives to appear "civilized". I would not trade one of our boys for 100000000000 of the other guys, civilian or soldier.

Read the Geneva Convention. Really. Read it.

Its due to the fact that the Hollow point leaves a devestating wound when not a kill shot. It is a medics nightmare.

Because the purpose of war is not to kill people, but rather to impose a political solution through the use of force.

I was told it is better to wound your enemy than kill him. That way, enemy expends hospital and support resources to fix him up.

It's not about "appearing" civilized. It's about BEING civilized. Forgive me if I strive to be a better person than a suicide bomber.

Not sure where I stand on this. I agree with "take the gloves off" to some extent, but I don't want American soldiers being shot with hollow points if we ever do actually fight a full-scale war with the type of enemy that would follow Geneva.
Also, how much has the use of FMJ ammo hampered us in recent wars? We may not have clear goals and the wars themselves may not be "winnable", but we win all the firefights.
On a related note, I took a tactical medicine class this weekend and the instructor shot up a dead hog with some 9mm hollow points so we could "treat" it. Seeing what the HPs did to that pig reinforced my strong preference for not getting shot.
