re: Who is "Lew" and why is he suddenly a major player in fishing gear?

Lew’s is following the same path as Pure Fishing; however, they seem to be pulling off the reel market as good or better than anybody at the moment.
Just like Pure Fishing, their high quality reels are Dawon or Doyo. As such, many of the parts are interchangeable with Garcia, 13 fishing, Pflueger, etc.

The Bb1 was reel to have way back when. I caught my first deep crankbait fish on one. Very simple construction, easy to clean and solid as a tank.
I have a BB19 that is nearly 20 years old.
I don't know anything about the new ones, never fished one.

Good chance the Mettles are made by Daiwa which would explain a lot. Daiwa and Shimano actually make things.

Diawa and Shimano design and control the mfg of their reels. If you look at first Lews was mfg by Shimano.
If you look at the top of line baitcasters worldwide in markets such as Japan you see more Diawa and Shimano.
Pure fishing and Lews have a mfg show them their designs and roll with that mfg’s designs. Nothing wrong with that except getting parts for a reel you like 3 yrs down the road will be harder than with Shimano or Diawa.

I'm a Shimano guy but have a Lew's Tournament baitcaster; once I got the brakes set right, it's a good reel but I'm still a Shimano guy.
ETA: Lew used to play BB; he changed his name to Kareem

That is actually more difficult that one might think. South Korea doesn't expose their entire internet to the U.S. so what you are actually reading is more than likely a Korean blog that has been (poorly) translated to English or you are looking at an Asian/Chinese commerce site like Ali Express of Alibaba that is again poorly translating Korean marketing material to English.
Several years ago when I lived in South Carolina, I used to shoot sporting clays with a fella that worked for Pure Fishing (HQ out of Columbia, SC). I also met Kevin Rush from Pro Reel Services at the Classic several years back. They both said very similar things about the current reel industry.
Basically, all reel companies can be divided into two groups: those that own their own manufacturing plant and those that don't. Shimano, Quantum, Daiwa, and I believe Ardent (I'm sure there's are few more I'm missing) all design and manufacture their own reels.
Pretty much everybody else (BPS, 13 fishing, Garcia, Pflueger, Okuma, Duckett, Pinnacle, Lews, and on and on) just plays a middle-man role between you and a Korean reel maker with an added bumper sticker and possibly a branded handle knob.
By far, Dawon and Doyo are the two biggest players for all of the middle-men's money. These two South Korean companies make a lot of reels for many companies and their quality ranges from complete shite to extremely well made reels that will last a lifetime.
Finding out which Korean company actually makes your reel is not an easy task. The best (public) source I have found is the guy that runs the Rods, Reels, and Line section of the bassresource forum. He also owns Delaware Valley Tackle and services just about all makes and models of reels. You can ask specific questions there and he could probably tell you exactly where your reels came from.

We all want to know. Also, did they ever go on sale like in previous years?

Haven't noticed because I haven't had to toss any of mine yet.
