Who is "Lew" and why is he suddenly a major player in fishing gear?

What company owns or has become Lew's? They always seem to make finding this out a pain in the arse.
It's been around for a while, but it never took up 20% of the fishing section before.
Who is their big corporate daddy now?

Their rods are some of the best value I have used.
Today, the Lew’s brand and its many well-known trademarks are under the ownership of Peak Rock Capital and longtime Childre family friend Lynn Reeves. Reeves has made the promise and commitment to return the Lew’s name to its place of prominence in the industry, keying on the same principles by which Lew Childre originally founded the company … building innovative products that are lighter, faster and stronger

Don't know Lew personally but I have two of his baitcasters for a few years now and have had zero problems. I have caught many big reds on a smaller bass sized reel and it's still held up

They’ve been around long enough to have their own museum.
I have a good bit of their reels and a few rods. Quality stuff. No complaints.

It says they used to be owned by Browning. I guess Browning never really tried to market and develop it. I think I'll try their flippin stick and get back to you. I don't like the color they designated for heavy rods (bright green), but it feels nice and is of quality material.

The original Lews person passed on I believe.
First Shimano made the Bantam reel.
After that the reel was made by a few companies Roybi, Browning, quantum, etc.
The modern day Lews was started up around 2010 after a guy named Lynn, who worked for basspro in purchasing reels left basspro to and bought the Lew’s name.
My friend has a sporting goods store and he took on Lews right when Lynn started it back up in 2010.

The old school Speed Spools were the tits in the mid to late 80's. Love the new reels, I've retired my Shimano's for the Tournament Lite Series Reels.

Thanks. I knew they existed before. I just noticed that over the course of the off-season/winter, they have completely blitzed the fishing section of Academy.
I like the flippin stick. It's good quality and the grips are sweet.

a few weeks back it was announced that Lew's bought Strike King...so they are not playing around...

Pretty sure I have Lew's reels from 4 different manufacturers. Also have a few of the true Ryobis.

I bought have lees rods. First fish with one of em and it XPLODED. But I set the hook like a frickin man, so........
J/j....chalked it up to shite happens. They replaced w no hassle. I’ve had other Chinese rods blow up as well so I started buying all American made. Idk if it’ll make a diff, but never had a falcon or g loomis break unless I broke it.

I just picked up the 7'6" stick for a reel someone got me for Christmas. Feels good, and looks great despite the bright green color.
I think they did that on purpose. All of the heavy $80 rods were in green, with cooler colors reserved for medium and light. But, if you want a heavy stick in a cooler looking color, they'll be happy to sell you the $160 "tournament series" rods.
Those little scamps. shite, if the color bothers me that much, I'll just go over it with tennis tape or something.

Who makes the H20 Xpress Mettle? That thing is a beast.

Lew’s is following the same path as Pure Fishing; however, they seem to be pulling off the reel market as good or better than anybody at the moment.
Just like Pure Fishing, their high quality reels are Dawon or Doyo. As such, many of the parts are interchangeable with Garcia, 13 fishing, Pflueger, etc.
It’ll be interesting to see how the buyout of Strike King plays out.

If it ain’t Shimano, Quantum, or Diawa, there’s a 99% chance it’s either Dawon, Doyo, or Kaito which are all Korean companies. Each company have factories in both Korea and China with higher quality reels being made in Korea and cheaper reels in China.

Oh, and just to stir some shite, you can search alibaba for Korean reels the exact same way the OB cooler thing got started.

In the early 80's my grandpa and dad use to take me into a shop in Foley, Al that had all Lew rods and reels. Not sure if it was the Childre family's or not.

I believe the founder Lew Childre died in a plane crash in the Gulf many years ago. Childre was the pilot. Could be mistaken, but I think one of his children was with him and also died.
