You can get relatively comfortable shooting with iron sights but I HIGHLY recommend an optic of some sort. A cheap sig red dot is more than adequate for most people. You won't believe how much faster you get back on target with the red dot.

I agree 100%. Especially with rear aperture sight.

Definitely. You can get a gen 2 vortex crossfire for $135 from sportoptic. Not aimpoint quality, but better than irons.

Red dot from irons is total game changer. $150 for an optic on an AR brings it to a new level

The chrome lining used in barrels lasts longer, period.

I prefer chrome lining over nitride, not to say nitride barrels cannot be good. I prefer the longevity of chrome over the very slight accuracy advantage you can gain from nitriding. It is worth noting, not all nitriding is the same, some barrels are properly nitrided and some skip the QPQ process. A good chrome lined barrel is going to out shoot 99.9% of shooters anyway, so I will take the longevity.

I don't believe that's the case. It's harder and has less friction than chrome. We still need chrome-lined for belt-fed weapons, but for burst and certainly for semi-auto ARs proper nitriding is cheaper, easier to make accurate and harder than chrome.

I have a Ruger AR556 and it is a fine weapon. Comes with pop up sights, and you can add optics. I added a Vortex Strikefire II red dot and it is really accurate out to 100 yards.

Mine was $579, but that was 3 years ago. I would look at the Ruger or The S&W Sport AR. Both are really good rifles.

Spend the rest on ammo.

Yeah I’d like just a basic reliable AR for under $800. I don’t need fancy. Just a SHTF gun.

Which do you prefer? I was hoping the second stimulus check would come in early enough to get one of these.

Thanks for the info. I have buddies that only buy expensive black rifles (Noveske, Daniel Defense, BCM, Geissele, etc.) and I have to occasionally remind them that it's the person pulling the trigger that ultimately determines how well bullets are placed. With that being said, I'm not going to lie because those expensive AR-15 rifles sure do shoot well and operate smoothly.

Yep.

Bought a lower from PSA. Upper from Bear Creek arsenal (7.62) changed the firing pin and snapped em together. $450. Dropped on a sightmark for $100.

Great gun. $550 bucks. Shot it yesterday again. Ammo is cheap.

I’m gonna hijack this thread and ask people’s opinion on grabbing an acog for a weapon that will be used for stalk deer hunting.

I’m probably going to get an AR10 platform weapon here soonish and want to throw a 2x or 3.5x acog on it because it’ll be used for walking through wooded areas as well as shooting across a field in the <125 yard range. Thoughts?

Alternative to acog?

They're nice rugged and crystal clear, but I would consider a low power variable or red dot with a magnifier (heavy, I know) if you're going to used it in wooded areas as well as open. For the price of an ACOG you could get some nice gear.

Is value the main issue or are the things you suggested actually superior for the purpose?

Trijicon makes good stuff, obviously.

For your intended use, I'd get a 1-6 or better from Vortex.

This might get some flack, not really sure, but one of mine is a cheap DPMS that I bought to paint and just have an extra one around and its been a great gun. I think it was like $475 if memory serves. The guy that said get the $600 gun and get $700 worth of ammo is probably right.
