One of the most important things that is often overlooked is being in good physical shape. Seems like there are a lot of 500 pound preppers out there that couldn't walk a mile if their life depended on it.
That's a good point. Also need to learn how to get around without a GPS or navigation system. There is a pile of shite other than plenty of ammo and potted meat to consider...

No I think he plans to stay at the house...hell he won't hardly leave now, can't imagine him leaving when there's zombies afoot.

If the zombies come I doubt if 100 times that would be enough, given you gotta double tap each one....

Compass and a map. Have those in my “emergency” storage.

That depends on if the property owner has the means of defending said property.

Take a look at the population within 30 miles of you.

That's how many bullets you need.

That is actually a pretty good rule of thumb.

Keep in mind, if you’re out of food, water and gas, so is everyone else. Get as far away as u can from metropolitan areas because “they” are looking for your stuff. They will take anything u have, “anything”. If a power outage lasts for a month, half the population will be sick or nearly dead. Guns and ammo will be like gold. Small groups of people have a better chance of survival than loners. This country is in trouble, there are some crazy, mentally insane, dangerous, mf’ers, running around, for us to survive, they have to go. This won’t be a picnic in the piney woods.

This is probably a good rule of thumb. Thats what it is logistically idiotic to think it is remotely possible to have enough on hand for more than a small number of people in the US. And then you ain't going to have enough to hold off the hoardes of foreign military who show up to restore "order".

Most people begin to suffer almost untenable hardships after 72 hours. Those of you on the gulf coast are better equipped for this than most given your experiences with Hurricanes.

6 years ago SE New Mexico got hit with 24 inches of snow and sub zero temps for about a week and sub freezing temps for about a month. The town I lived in only had 2 ways in and out other than oil field roads...population of about 25000 with another 25000 or so oil field hands not counted in the first number. Within 3 days of being shut off from the outside world the shelves in the 3 grocery stores in town were empty of staple items and people were getting ugly. The governor put the national guard on alert. 72 hours. Power stayed on for most people. Most people had municipal water which stayed flowing and the water treatment plant was operational. Had the power gone off and diesel fuel been unavailable to those two resources people would have started dying....old folks and those who were already ill...and folks heat would have not been available so poor people living in older housing with poor insulation and no fireplaces would have suffered tremendously. 72 hours and empty shelves at walmart and some fist fighting broke out...imagine the same scenario without power and running water. Again, those of you on the Gulf Coast know better than the rest of the US how tenuous "society" is when the lights go off.....

First time I've seen this thread. I guess we are preppers. We keep stocked up on ammo and food and fuel. Lately we've been experimenting with some different ways to can meat in mason jars. It works pretty well with both beef and pork, if you use vinegar/lime juice and salt and tastes good for recipes with beans or other vegetables. I've even done a few jars of grilled steak, that tasted really good, but I'm not sure yet how long it will last. Just an alternative to beef jerky and summer sausage.

Preparedness isn't the stuff in your garage.

Preparedness is a mindset.

Yeah.. well, if you want to be prepared, having the right tools in your garage can damn sure help, but only if you already know how to use them. Learning the things that will help you pull through, is a lifelong process and you have to practice and experiment. You also can't be focused on a single type scenario. You have to have flexibility in the way that you prepare, because things may not happen exactly like you think they will.

The all metal can? Probably at least 20 years if stored in a dry place. The plastic cans, foil pouches, or the cans that are mostly paper, I don't know if I would trust them as much.

The way that we do things, we don't just buy things and store them forever, we store extra, of things that we normally use anyway and kind of cycle through it and replace what we use.
