I have seen them do that when they got overheated or exhausted. I have had them get trapped in the barn and garage.

I think ours are pretty much gone. We have 2 feeders, 1 in the back and 1 in the front. But because of the ongoing drought in the west, about a month ago, we pulled out the grass in our parking strip and put in perennials. Ever since then, they pretty much ignored the feeder and only worked the plants in the front yard. He had up to 4 of them at one time in the garden. It was awesome.

They are swarming southwest Mississippi now and for the last week. Filling feeders 2-3times a day!

They've been usual all year. Have about 6 that are regulars right now.

Saw one pop up at my feeder yesterday after not seeing any for quite a while. Filled it up and had several females and at least 1 male feeding all day long. Just south of Lafayette.
No fights among them either surprisingly. Usually when they show up at my feeder there will be 1 male that acts ridiculously territorial and chase every other one away.

Cold front coming has really upped my #s today in N MS. 20-30 swarming around my 3 feeders on and off most of the day.
