What’s wrong with my gas trimmer?

First off, it’s been sitting for a few years. I drained the stale fuel out of it. Put fresh 50:1 2 cycle fuel in it. I trimmed up 3/4 of my front yard when it started to sputter then died. It will start back up only to quickly sputter and die. It’s a snapper S28CD curved shaft.

It runs on gas instead of electricity.
Specifically... I don't know. Guessing the carb is all gummed up.

Fresh gas help dissolve the residual crud in the system then deposited it in the carburetor. Tank, lines and carb need to b e cleaned in order to ensure it doesn't happen again.

If it's been sitting that long with stale gas in it which was most likely never drained properly before storing it...you will need to remove the carb a give it a really good cleaning (or even soak it in a carb cleaner solution). I'd be willing to bet it's all gummed up with carbon buildup in there. Other thing, I'd do is check the fuel lines and fuel filter. I don't think just running a fuel cleaner mixed in the gas will help much if it's been sitting that long, but just my opinion.

Spark plug, air filter, carburetor, small screen over exhaust, fuel line, fuel filter, check and clean all these and should be good to go.

In addition to all these guys' suggestions, make sure there isn't an air leak somewhere in the fuel system. A cracked priming bulb or loose gas tank fuel line seal will cause problems too.

Sounds like every experience I ever had w a weed eater. Until I switched to the premixed fuel.
Something with is in the fuel line or filter is bad the fuel line is trashed.

Like they said , fuel will degrade the fuel line and cause cracks in the bulb . Might be sucking air .

Yup.
The carb may get just enough gas when full and then when 1/4 or less of fuel with air leak not getting enough fuel to carb.
Without looking at it.
I would check to see with my small pump to see if carb leaking.
Then I would check the hoses and tank.
Now sometimes ignition coil heats up and stops it takes awhile for that.
Not much to 1/2 crank 2 banger.
