My lab breaks every time me or someone in my group shoots, and I don't know the best way to stop it. It's extremely frustrating.

Anyone had problems like this and/or know how to fix it?

Put a 3ft leash on him. Step on leash. Throw dummy, shoot gun, when he breaks, he stops abruptly 3ft in front of you. Repeat until he stays, then start taking the leash off with same process

Either tie him during the hunt, while ducks are working tell him to stay, and untie him and send him off when he shows he can sit steady; or you don't shoot until everyone has their limit and train the dog during the hunt. Get on his arse if he thinks about breaking.

Eh, I wouldn't go straight to the shock.

Go for the leash first.

Lease hooked to a trailer hitch. He'll do a back flip until he figures it out.

Yeah, this is what I did this morning. I had a lead, hooked it to his collar and when ducks were working I was holding him. They shot and he didn't try to break because I had him on the lead.

Next group of birds, I took the lead off thinking he had it and he broke on shot.

Get a 2' x 2' piece of wood about an inch thick. Drill a hole directly between two corners and run a rope just long enough to reach the dogs collar. Hook the dog to the rope and he can not go anywhere. Once he gets used to staying on dummy drills your problem should be solved.

Even when he stops breaking I would keep him on lead if hunting out of a pit., you never know when a dog might break and it's an easy way for one to get shot

Breaking to the point where the dog understands he can't break unless you aren't holding on to him is difficult to fix. I like the pinch collar on him.

What kind of training do you do with him when not hunting? Is he collar conditioned to an e-collar? If collar conditioned I would go straight to that to enforce a command he already knows and understands. However if he hasn't been introduced to an e-collar you need to stay away from it. Gotta do a lot of training to fix the problem.

I've never used an e-collar on him. I did all the training with him myself but didn't use an e-collar.

I forgot to add. When dummy training, he never breaks. Doesn't even think about it. It's only a problem when I add the gun and it's live.

I'm gonna give the pinch collar a try, and like you said, it's going to take a lot of training. I really just need to work with him more like I did when he was a little younger.
