Is that mainly due to bullet fragments?

no, because it's heavy as shite. in my post, i mention that mine weighs out to be around 30 pounds without loaded mag. companies are now putting extra coating on the face of the steel plates to catch the spalling (bullet fragments).

here, you can see the build up coating catch the bullet fragments.

you can get ceramic, but you're gonna pay for it. steel is cheaper and it will last your 30+ years and you'll likely never use it. ceramic only lasts 5 years and you have to store it properly so it doesn't fracture or break before you actually need it.

If I felt like I needed a bullet proof vest then I don’t think bargain quality is what I’d go for

In what home defense situation do you have time to even put one on once someone breaks through your door or window

Why steel plates or ceramic? Why not just get a lighter Kevlar vest

While we are at it, anyone know where I can get a shark with a lazer beam attached to his head? You know for the moat I just dug.

PE armor is probably the best choice. It protects up to level 3 bullets and isn’t as heavy as Steel plates. Even though any home invasion is likely going to involve a handgun not a high powered rifle so a simple Kevlar vest would likely suffice

Kevlar is used in soft body armor. It too has am expiration date. UV light eventually starts to weaken medlar.

They have expiration dates and should be discarded once expired. FYI.

Expiration dates on everything but milk are the biggest fraud perpetrated by man. The Department of Defense has lead the way to see if there is any validity to them in everything from drugs to airplane parts, and with few exceptions found they are arbitrary and meaningless. They now replace aircraft parts based on condition inspection not manufacturers recommended time interval. They now keep most drugs for 10 years regardless of the manufacturers expiration date.

Let me clarify. Lol
Home defense aka survival / bugout equipment. I though vests would go hand in hand with the gung ho types in here

My area is fine, not North BTR or NOLA

Informative comments from all. Thx

So many people here giving you shite but these are the same ones grabbing ARs left and right for "home defense."

Not a bad idea at all to have armor for a SHTF situation which is looking more and more possible as social collapse looms.

What's the sense in having guns and multiple thousands of rounds yet not one piece of protection? That's not how we supply our soldiers.

Carry on

An escape plan and being stealth would be a better plan especially is someone comes at you with hot round and well placed shot neck groin, shotgun to the groin 000 done. I understand prep but security fences cameras that allows you to maintain distance you are better off in fortification
