Not the area in which I would go cheap.

Depends on what you want. Level 3A? Level 3? Level 4?
Have a look at Botach.

Get ceramic plates. Stay away from steel plates, on the body is not a good application. The company I know the most people at with body armor doesn't sell to civilians but they have done extensive testing with steel plates, stuff stronger than AR500, different coatings, and it just doesn't hold up to the claims, and even shots that don't penetrate can kill you. I have seen some of the plates that got shot and have seen the stuff they get sent back from actual shootings and it is a night and day difference.

Figure out what caliber of round you want to defeat in a home defense scenario. Stay away from steel. Check out RMADefense

Bought some level 3+ steel plates from CATI Armor (Come And Take It).
2 week turn around compared to Spartan and AR500 Armor (the company, not the marketing term).
Condor MOPC w/ lvl3+ plates $365
It should stop M193 and M855 5.56 ammo. Should stop a 30-06 round as well.
Lvl 3+ stopping M855
Lvl 3+ stopping M193
It’s gonna be heavy. Especially if you load it out with 30 round magazines. But there are lighter plates out there. They’re definitely more expensive, however. One ceramic plate costs just as much as the setup above.
The customer service reviews online aren’t great for this company. I bought mine over the summer and thought I needed for a trip back south for Labor Day weekend. The 2 weeks were up and I emailed about my order and they shipped it out that day.
Some will say they get ignored and whatnot, but I guess it’s all about the risk. It worked out for me though. Got my plates and carrier and loaded them up for a trip home.
I think without an mags loaded down, it weighs 30ish or so lbs.
ETA: Check out their lead times page on their website...

Is that mainly due to bullet fragments?

Can you imagine getting home from the grocery store, kicking off your shoes, and throwing on your bullet-proof vest?

Check out Hoplite Armor. Good deals and solid armor.
Remember pounds equals pain. Try to get multi curve rather than single curve. Huge difference in comfort.

Can you tell me a scenario where you would need/use for home defense? Genuinely curious.

Seriously, why?
Home defense? But.....why?
I get the gadget itch, but this just seems rather odd.

David Koresh is that you?
But really there is none. Unless he were to keep the flak by his side at all times while he’s home, maybe. I don’t see a scenario where you can quickly find and throw a vest on, arm yourself, then prepare for an intruder, all within a reasonable time of them confronting you. Maybe if you live in 10000 sq ft home.
