You ever seen the movie doomsday? That bus that says "out of fricking service" on the front. I want that one.

True, but horses are more plentiful, either way though its going to be the best mode of transportation. Not sure how everyone is planning on getting gas for cars and such. Plus horses/mules are pretty damn quiet.

Eta: hit submit too soon.

Good replies here and I like the horse for long term.

I was thinking more of an initial transportation mode right after the event, which could be an EMP event which would mess up anything late model.

Something large enough, good on gas, to get to a safe, remote location. I would have enough Sta-bil treated fuel to reach this location and would travel before widespread panic
(lawlessness) set in.

I would also be well-armed.

Late 80s Hilux, 4wd, 4 cyl diesel is where I'm at.

A dirt/street MC. There's almost nowhere you can't go on one, great gas mileage, tough, and easily hidden when you get where you want to go. Can you lock a truck inside with you at night or take it down in the storm shelter with you?

If everything was knocked out from EMP then lawlessness would occur almost instantly. You would be a target from the get go. Something a little more prolonged gives you more of a chance, however traveling at night would still be recommended.

Being armed will be meaningless when driving. Other people will be armed also and unless you are in an armored vehicle they will shoot you through the glass, or possibly shoot your tires just to stop you. The actions of a desperate mob can't be predicted.

I'm not trying to rain on anyone's plans, because I have thought about this topic myself. I have come to the conclusion that post-event travelling in a large, noisy vehicle could be very, very dangerous. All of the cars that will be dead will be scattered in the road, not to mention natural and manmade roadblocks which will slow the vehicle down. When the vehicle is slow or stopped the occupants become a target of opportunity.

Even horses will have to be protected from thieves.

Realistically, travel on foot, although slow as molasses, will give you the greatest security and sustainability options. People who are disabled and elderly are special considerations in this event, but, let's be honest, they aren't going to last very long in the environment, anyway.

I, myself, require medication for blood pressure control. Couple that with the added stress of a calamity, I don't have very long - even though I am still fairly young (45) and have extensive wilderness survival experience.

If such a calamity goes down and it's temporary, I'll be fine. However, if it extends to months or years, it will be Darwinian stress test the likes of which the Earth hasn't seen in centuries.

Still though, like said cars are noisy as frick. Going to be even noisier with nothing else running. I've snuck up on numerous deer while riding my horse, would make hunting easier. Horses also swim, and if you get really hungry well, ole trigger gonna produce a lot of meat.
