First time quail hunting in Ms. What license do I need to get? It's not stated clearly on MDWFP.

MS Hunting and Fishing License Regs

It looks like if you’re only shooting pen raised quail, then all you need is a shooting preserve license. If you’re hunting wild quail, you’ll need to buy an out of state small game hunting license (annual or 7 day).

I’d call the place that you’re hunting to verify.

The outfitter can probably sell you a license for less and it's good for a year. Check with your outfitter and good luck, it's a blast.

You likely are not hunting wild birds which means you’re hunting a preserve.

The outfit should have what you need. Contact them and see if they do. If not they will tell you what to buy

Back in 1983, group of us decided to go squirrel hunting in Mississippi for the opening weekend. All hands licensing. Few squirrels Saturday. Steaks and drinks sat night.

Then on Sunday.......as we dispersed at first light with shotguns in hand, along comes the game warden collecting all ten of us to go to the local judges house where he holds court for the crime of hunting on Sunday . Fined us each a hundred dollars each, cash only.

As we are leaving the judge suggest we do so carefully because there is a state trooper a mile down the road

Correct, and it is like $18, but why, you are not hunting, you are shooting pen raised birds that have been put out 10 minutes before , shooting livestock, just another money grab

Clearly with that response he has not.

I'm not so sure OP is going on a guided hunt though maybe he is just trying out a WMA or something? Reason I say that is if he was why would he ask this board and not ask who he is going with?

Several times a year, twice already this year, a good friend of mine runs an operation in Jayess ms about 3 miles away from my camp, possibly where the OP is going? (Thornhill shooting preserve) and it is fun, it is sporting, it is challenging , but I do not consider it hunting

When’s the last time you hunted wild birds in MS is the better question.

The last wild quail I have shot in MS was in 1993, in liberty, I have seen a few on my property in Walthall county, but certainly not a huntable population……. Yet, hoping that my food plots and habitat improvements will allow hunting at some point, but the wild quail outlook is certainly not bright

Better question is why do you have to pay the state a fee to shoot livestock.

If you purchased goats from the farmer down the street, and he put them in the woods to allow you to shoot them as they walked by, would you buy a license for private property?

Sure sounds like government overreach to me!

Exactly my point, hell these birds were not even hatched in Mississippi……. Just another money grab

I’m enjoying the heck out of listening to Fire University Podcast. I have 218 acres and plan to burn about 40 acres per year on a 4 yr rotation, plus burn the other 50 or so acres on an every other year basis. The property i purchased was clear cut almost 5 years ago. I did a lot of habitat work this year and have had a few quail and even a few woodcock show up. I start with the fire this year and look forward to the results.

I’ve gone on a few of the pen bird hunts with my dad and enjoyed it. Dad is 73 and in good shape. I hope to hunt quail with him on my place before his days are over. He hunted quail with his Dad when he was young, so it’s still a passion for he and my uncles. Paw paw was a WW2 and Korean War vet and quail hunting was a joy of his!

Experts tell me I can’t do it on 218 acres, but I like a challenge.

I remember 1983 pretty vividly, and I feel certain I did not lay eyes on a real $100 bill at any point in that year .

“You can call me Gary. And you can call me Wayne. But don’t call me Gary Wayne.”

Seconded. And if that’s where OP is going, then Wayne sells licenses.
