I’ve hunted several places that used walkins including my current place and we never split the ribs, there’s plenty of room to drop everything once the hide is off the neck, and no need to go for spotless inside the ribcage.

I have an old Browning 3 blade that my grandfather left me. Skinning blade, guthook and saw. Since I always field dress, I use that to crack the sternum.

I skin a bunch of deer and I don’t split the sternum. I just let the guts fall enough to get the tenderloins out. Cut the front quarters off, backstraps and hind quarters, and occasionally the neck.

When I was in a lease we used a battery powered sawzall.

Public land hunting I pack out the meat. Use a folding Milwaukee hand saw with the metal sawzall blade. So it’s about the size of a redbull can folded up. Use this for cutting feet off, cutting through the sternum, neck roast ect. Found the saws made for this have the bigger teeth and are a PIA compared to the metal blade.

That’s the way most of us do it.

I want to go out West and kill something that I have to work for. That or Alaska.

Recip saw, I keep a few entire deer over the course of the year for sausage. Hang them whole in walk-in. Rest of them just leave guts in

I like most on here don't cut the sternum anymore. Back in the day when I did I used the knife below. The serrated edge would make it an easy cut.

I skin one side of elk, cut meat off the bone, then roll it over and do the same.

Reciprocating saw for ripping sternun and pelvis. Use to cut off legs and head/neck. Use for butchering as well. Get a set of stainless steel blades from Amazon.
