I killed 18 cottonmouths and water snakes with a little old golf club one day behind my folks house! Went riding the 4 wheeler thru the water and saw snakes going Everywhere so we went back to the house and grabbed a pitching wedge and went to town

Dude needs to check his sarcasm meter

Pretty good chance if you see a snake coiled up in the swamp in june at my place it's a cottonmouth, despite common OB opinion.

that's def a cottonmouth in downshifts pic, they're dark colored in the swamp, it has that wide head that leaves no doubt, i've walked up on them curled up on lillypads while in hipboots where they could have struck my nuts without a moments notice, i've been lucky, they are all over the damn swamp

Cottonmouths are easy to spot swimming. Short, stubby, and floating. If it looks long its probably not a cottonmouth.

Anybody who wants to learn what they look like is welcome to go check my trail camera for me this week.

smell them. if they smell the shite, then it's definitely a cotton mouth.

I don't know any other way to say this without coming across as a smartarse, so here it goes:

Anybody living here in the south, especially if you are going to be wondering around in the swamps and woods, needs to know how to positively identify our poisonous snakes.

You need to know this because knowledge is power.

There are only four species of venomous snakes in the U.S.. Cottonmouth, Rattle Booger, Copperhead & Coral Snake.

You can adopt the policy of all snakes are poisonous and that will serve you well. Most of the time it's the snake that you don't see that gets you.

I had a friend once shoot a hole in the bottom of his boat because a common water snake dropped in on him when his bow nosed into some branches.

He killed the snake, but ruined a good day of fishing because he had to get the boat back to the ramp before it sunk.

Most importantly, if you are ever bitten, the EMT is gonna need to know what hit ya, so he can administer the proper anti venom.

LINK

I remember reading about this in April on Facebook. Get yourself one and keep it on you when you are when you are out fricking around in the woods.

Be the good Boy Scout and always be prepared. I will save your life.

Now, that's all I have to say about that!

That's a cottonmouth, yes. And, while I'm sure you south LA folks have a lot more of them than we do up here, most of you dumb frickers still don't know the difference between a cottonmouth and a piece of old rope. There are probably more watersnakes identified at cottonmouths than there are actual cottonmouths.

But, the real question is, why hasn't anyone asked how you got that swarm of bees off your face? Are you ok, brah?

They didn't stink yesterday. Usually during hunting season I smell em before I see em but neither me nor my buddy smelled any yesterday.

They didn't flash their white mouths at us either. Clearly a spade head water snake

They were much less aggressive than usual.

Pretty sure the stink is a self defense thing

Well Teague..this SWLA boy knows a moccasin when I see one. I also know it's funny as hell when you throw them sumbitches in salt water and watch 'em swell up like a balloon.

I'm just lucky I haven't run into any timber rattlers they got up here in N. Alabama.

I've known what a cottonmouth was since I was 3 yrs old. My dad used to walk the creek behind my grandpaw's house and shoot them.
