re: What is Your Opinion of Duck Hunting Opportunities in Other States vs Louisiana

I hunt KS every year and it can be hit or miss but if there is water you will smash. I hunted public ground for a week this year and limited out on nothing but green every day. It was silly, and no comparison to La. There were thousands and thousands of green heads.

Louisiana is literally one of the worst states to kill ducks in, especially one of the states that is considered "a duck state". Arkansas is where it's at.
12/13-13/14 Harvest Data says you couldn't be more wrong.
Page 11-18 shows that not only are more ducks killed in the state of Louisiana(2.76 million - 2.39 million) than the rest of the Mississippi Flyway (accounting for somewhere between 1/4-1/3 of total ducks killed), but also more ducks are killed in Lousiana every year than all of the Atlantic Flyway combined.

Montana has some pretty great Mallard hunting.
A buddy had a property with a creek that would never freeze. When everything else was frozen you couldnt keep the Green heads out of that damn thing, even though it was less than a foot deep.

Now divide all of those ducks killed by number of hunters. The OP is talking about OPPORTUNITY.

That might be one of the most ignorant statements I've ever read on here. And that's saying something.
The OPPORTUNITIES in LA far exceed those in every other state - that's why there are so many more hunters. Just because you can kill more greenheads on average in other states doesn't mean LA isn't the king when it comes to duck hunting.
ETA: Regarding the OP, I'm hoping OK is less pressured than where I've been hunting in NWLA the past 4 years. Can't seem to go anywhere without being covered up by other hunters.

That info is at the bottom of the data... Still higher than Arkansas or Missouri, or any other state in the flyway and second to only California in ducks per hunter. But you would have seen that had you read it. Just because it isn't a mallard doesn't mean it doesn't count as a duck.

I would love to be a local and get to know the Metro better. I am like you, done pretty good on limited knowledge after going with some Mallard killing Arkie hands on numerous occasions.
Made some stellar timber hunts near the end of the season last year in the Mecca but sadly, NE LA is really just become a Grey Duck factory and honestly Arkie is just to hard to stay on Green unless you live or guide up there. For my getaways, it will be Oklahoma for here on out for Mallards.

Some of the posters are comparing guided hunts in mallard-heavy areas to public land hunting in Louisiana as though they should be on equal footing. I know several public land hunters in LA that kill mallards and that kill numbers of good ducks consistently - it just takes work that most people aren't willing to put into it. And then when they do make it to public land they stop at the first hole and bitch about how it's overcrowded and they don't see birds.

I got some friends that come up from Monroe to hunt every year. May have to make a hunt or two next year if you make it up this way.
I've never hunted the central flyway except the Red River in NWLA. Would love to get on a good OK mallard shoot. A buddy of mine used to hunt over a peanut farm there. He said their duck craw looked like they swallowed a snickers bar!

I haven't hunted ducks long enough to think this way. All decoying birds still give me a chubby, some more so than others, namely pintail drakes.

Gonna try to go right after Christmas to Okie this year. A group from Monroe went last season right before Christmas and smashed them (mostly Green and Canadas plus a few Snows). OK will probably replace AR for my road trips from now on unless I get lucky to build a pipeline up there. The only reason I was able to go home and hunt Mecca as much during the end of the season was I started a project in Ruston.

MWP, you didnt tell how hard it would be to get on the calendar for one of the outfitters you go with...
They LOL'd at me when I asked about teal season, hahaha.

What part of OK do you hunt? I'm moving to OKC in the next couple of months and have mainly focused my internet scouting on western Okie - hoping to avoid crowds.

This entire statement contradicts itself twice. And, it's not just about Mallards. Rice field hunting, one the of main ways to hunt ducks in LA, especially in the Acadiana area, has been horrible for what now? A decade? You can go to Arkansas, hunt public land with ALOT less pressure than LA public land and kill more ducks. The total numbers are irrelevant because everyone duck hunts around here. Of course there will be more ducks killed.

I think it's all land management. We used to take a guided trip in Wharton,tx once a year for geese. 55,000 acres of managed fields with water. As of 2 years ago they were at 475 consecutive hunts killing a limit of ducks. The Ducks were like bees in a swarm. Good ducks too. I think south la has nothing to offer the ducks. No habitat. And yes I have a lease in SE la and it gets worse every year

What public ground did you hunt?

Georgia sucks dick for the most part. However a certain lake south of the Columbus area was completely covered up in redheads. I don't know why. I had to stop shooting and just started filming (phone broke a month later & lost the videos). Took the boat out over the main lake and it looked like 10,000 gnats in the sky as far as the eye could see.

The number for Arkansas is probably not indicative of actual opportunity to kill ducks. Nearly every duck hunter I know is mallard crazy, to the point that mallards are all they will kill. I've been on hunts where the group could have limited out and left with only 4 or 5 mallards because no one would shoot "trash ducks." It's part of the reason I quit going, I'm an equal opportunity killer

I hunt Cache and White with my uncle and a few old timers. They get so fricking rustled if anyone shoots anything besides a greenhead.

well when you have 55000 acres to hunt i'm sure you can do pretty good.
