Do it anyway. Take out a loan if you have to.

When you have the time, you won't have the money, but when you finally have the money you won't have the time.

4. The attitude of companies leasing land has changed. I am on the Board of our club which has been in existance for 40 years. Last year, we were told by the company we lease from that they intend to keep raising the lease payments until they start losing a lot of clubs. They don't really need that income stream with all the liability exposure and additional trouble on their end.
If they are oen to discussing it, there are good points in favor of hunting leases, rather than open, unmanaged land. Plus, the insurance costs could be paid by the club and may not be too bad spread around.

My source was a direct statement to me by the timber company representative in charge of hunting leases.

I am/was blessed with inheriting property which hold a few deer. The problem now is the surrounding land which is not being farmed is getting cleared/subdivided, thus bringing more people in and a greater chance of people "wandering" onto my property to hunt.

This is why I am so dead set against trespassers. True, they may be "fellow hunters" but they are reducing my chances, whatever you what to call it for my sons and I to take an animal. That chance won't be there for long so I must take advantage of it now.

this thread is depressing me and is very true

all the land that my family has owned on my mom's side has been split between generations and children and eventually sold off, land that we used to be able to hunt on in south texas, i know the same will happen with my grandpa's land too

I hear you.

My grandparents on my mom's side had 500acres in New Roads that went from the river all the way to the levee. Wasn't the best hunting(Except for squirrels and rabbits which was amazing), but it was family land and I knew I always had permisson to go whenever I wanted. Now since their both passed it has been sold off and it makes me mad.

Another societal factor that hastens the process (IMO only) is that many people in rural areas tend to remain on family property or nearby, (as opposed to moving far away), which means that in many cases, land is always going to be split up among x number of heirs. So, the chances of you having free reign on the same land you enjoyed as a kid gets less and less and time goes on. This has affected me directly.

people have gotten so damn competitive b/c of deer hunting.

we used to run dogs back in the day, you have no idea how fun it was.

it's all about having fun, getting out of the city. Like it's said, "the best thrill is to let live". Shoot what you need and enjoy being in the woods.

i've seen families split over hunting land, a crying shame it is.

Yes I do because we used to also, at the lease in MS. Good stuff.

I'd bet the hunting land was just the symptom or the final straw, not the sole reason.

Dog hunting was cool, but I always enjoyed still hunting or stalking. So often with dogs you get deer running by at breakneck speed. I once had about 20 does run by in a herd and I'm frantically looking for a rack..none.

Same experience as a kid, with the deer running on both sides of me.

Back in the day, hunting was more about the experience IMO. Now, its more about the trophy. One thing I am happy about locally is that we have hunter education in middle school. Boys and girls participate. It teaches some more traditional hunting values such as tracking, picking appropriate targets and marksmanship.
