So I graduate from college LSU in mechanical engineering on Friday. I don’t start working in Houston till June 11th.

So what’s the most logical thing to do??

Right call up a boat captain in destin and ask if he doesn’t mind me deckhanding for a few weeks.

Any tips on how to make good impressions and things to do/not to do? Understand that 99% if this job is boat maintence and washing.

64’ enclosed bridge Viking is what I’ll be working on mostly but was told that he’s got a few boats that he could use some help with.

If I was you, I would go fishing every damn day possible. If you don't have a boat, get or borrow a kayak. There is endless fishing here and right now is primetime.

Before you officially become a Texan, buy a lifetime Louisiana fishing license. You'll thank meet later

Already have had a combo since I was like 6 or something. Going to get my Texas residency then buy one of their lifetime licenses. I think I only need to be a resident for 6 months

Don't offend the guys ego if he's with his woman. Let him help her as much as he can, but offer when you think it's needed. Not everyone needs help, so try to figure out who needs the most assistance and who doesn't. Just be friendly and talkative, that goes a long way and definitely helps your tips. Watch the beer can! If it looks low, reload or get ready to reload. If they want you to fish, only deny once. The second time roll with it and have fun. Just be personable and you will make plenty of change when they leave the boat.

ETA: washing the boat/maintenance- if you don't know how to turn wrenches, ask lots of questions and be a gopher. Washing th boat is simple, scrub the poo out of it, don't miss any nooks or crannys, and if there is brass, get some brasso and a soft rag and make it shine.

There’s a decent chance you don’t show up for that job in Houston. I could see how a young guy could get used to getting paid cash to work a boat and hang out in Destin.

Learn the basic knots for leaders and circle hooks. I would be lying if I said I knew them all but a snell and double uni are very common. Wouldn’t hurt to watch some YouTube videos on crimping for reef/grouper rigs. If the captain wants them done a certain way he’ll let you know.

Other than that, do what you’re told and don’t bitch and you’ll be fine.

Let them give you the chance to do it first and prove yourself! Don't go grab wrenches and start turning on their boat, the one time you do it will be the exact opposite of what they were thinking. Just like working lines, I did it for 8 years in the coast guard and I step on someone's fishing boat and they are schooling me.

Stay friends with that guy. You might be an assistant coach for LSU after he gets hired to be head coach one day.

I agree with this 100%...did this in the '90s when I was about to move and have not regretted it for a minute.

Buy a one way ticket to Costa Rica. Spend as many days/nights possible fricking, drinking, and doing enough blow to send you into the sweet sweet bliss of death as a vibrant 20 something at the peak of physical, mental, and emotional stability, before your soul is crushed by the sinking monotonous depression from the unending miseries of life after college.
