I’d buy him something that you may think will be outlawed in the next few to ten years.

Thanks all for the ideas!
I like the idea of keeping the Browning BPS 20 ga. running but I already have a new unfired Ithaca 20 ga. youth model that will probably end up his.
Got some more thinking to do on this one.

Congrats on your fresh-off-the-lot grandson. My parents are about to make grandparent status as well so I'm sure my dad has thought of this.
I was gifted a Henry Golden Boy in 22 Mag from my groomsmen for my wedding. Ms Bapple made that suggestion like the awesome wife she is. I think down the road I may hang it on the wall because it's quite the looker (even if it's even more fun to shoot).
I think that 20 ga Browning would be a solid suggestion but I've always advised a Ruger 10/22. You can get a youth stock for it while they're little and then upgrade to a larger one when they get older. It's a rifle that can used at pretty much any stage in life.

Awesome gift. I have 4 Ithacas, all in 12 GA. I’m a huge fan of the Model 37 featherweight and am left handed. I also have several BPS in 12GA. My oldest boy is now 6 and currently is zoned in on guns. I’m picking up a youth model 410 this week, as I’ve never owned a 410.
My dad bought both of my sons a lifetime hunting and fishing license within their first year of life. They will cherish that forever when they’re old enough to understand it. I suggest the lifetime license or even a Ruger 10-22 as another option.
Congrats again for the new addition to the family.

Cooper Jackson Squirrel rifle
Don’t know what your budget is but this is one of the finest .22 rifles you will put your hands on. It will never loose it value.
