When I was younger it was much more about the hunt/harvest. These days...not so much. I'd trade 10 bucks for a relaxing weekend with my dad and friends around the camp fire. As I am sure, some of you can relate...hunting is just an excuse to get away from all that stresses man and afford the opportunity for companionship.
Pretty much this.

I find that just being in the woods is so relaxing. Doesn't matter what I am hunting but deer hunting is the best. I used to be the type that couldn't sit still but as I've gotten older I really enjoy just sitting in the stand and relaxing. It's such a stress reliever to just get away from everything.
I would love to go on one of those do it yourself hunts out west somewhere. Go spend a week or two in the mountains.

I find myself going through the same changes. Shoot, last year I now hunted the entire season didn't picke up rifle but once in Texas. I passed on every deer I saw. I was more interested in the hunts than the kill. I love being in the woods on crisp cold mornings just watching them wake up. I'd much rather hunt a treestand than a box for this reason. I feel like I'm in it.
Also I love the prep work. I love scouting, setting stands, running cameras, building food plots. It's the main thing I miss about having my own place. I just don't get why people don't love work weekends. If I could I'd be out there constantly trying to improve the quality of my hunts through prep work

I never understood how so many could be consumed by it. I don't like to deer hunt because of many reasons:
1/ I like to shoot when I hunt and deer hunters don't shoot much. I like a good dove or duck hunt, for example.
2/ Sitting still and quiet for hours is just not me. Too hyper to enjoy that.
3/ Can't visit like you can in a duck blind or standing by two on a dove hunt.
4/ Just don't find deer meat that good. Especially if it went for several hours in warmer temps before hitting the cooler.
Pretty much this. I love calling to ducks and bringing them in and having my dog beside me and him picking the birds up.

same here man! i spend more time prepping than hunting! and love it! I have never killed a deer with my bow, last yr was my 2nd yr hunting with a bow.
1st yr had a spike 3 days in a row at 10yds and never shot
2nd yr, had doe, 4pt, and small 8pt at 15-20yds and never took the shot..
even though is never killed with the bow, it just wasny what i was looking for at the right time. One of those "didnt seem right" 2 yrs ago i also passed on a NICE 10 pt at 40yds with a rifle because it wasnt a shot i liked, was facing me and i just didnt want to chance messing up and wounding or losing such a nice deer. And dont regret it a bit, the deer was still on trail camera last yr and even bigger and im excited to see if he is back this yr!

Not sure if the OB turned into the soccer board overnight, but I like the killing of deer more than anything. Sure the peace and quiet is nice, and I like watching deer too, but I go hunting with the intention of coming home with a pile of meat every time. Even if I'm trophy hunting I leave my truck with the intention of letting the air out of an animal. I hunt with my dad and brother like many of you, and enjoy my time with them. We'll bond around a fire after dark. During legal shooting hours it's 100% business, unless someone has a child hunting with him. Then there is plenty of can shooting and teaching going on.

The adrenaline rush when Ol Big finally steps out. Usually materializing out of nowhere. All of a sudden a slow, sleepy morning turns into a heart thumping encounter.

Killing "deer" is not a problem. I always get plenty. But I don't need to kill anything to have a good trip.

just asking, but if you already have meat in the freezer and a doe walks out you are still shooting it? I mean everyone goes hunting "with the intentions of killing" but to me there is ALOT more to it now and i dont leave the house saying im going to kill a deer if i see a deer..

Others have said it better, but for me it's all about the anticipation of what could happen at any moment.

Same here. I LOVE duck hunting, but I do enjoy having the option to deer hunt. Sometimes I like the change of pace. I am an introvert, so I enjoy being out there by myself, knowing anything could step out and flip the script at any time.
Honestly I think I enjoy the work more than the hunt. I love working, planting, setting up (especially new areas), running camera cards, etc.

It's extremely difficult to kill mature trophy whitetail bucks if your intention is to kill deer. Every time you squeeze that trigger or release that arrow you run the risk of spooking a mature buck watching from the thicket waiting to step out. Anyone can go kill meat, it takes skill and determination to trick a truly mature, keen, trophy whitetail buck into making a mistake and stepping into the kill zone

Just have to say "pretty much this"

To me, deer hunting these days = Napping in the cool weather out in the woods with a rifle in my arms.
Love watching the transition from dark to day.

. There is just someting about getting out of the house, no work, no stress, just me..God..and nature that sets my mind at ease. The best time for me is mornings, right as i get settled in the stand in the pitch dark, that 30-45 mins before daylight where i cant see anything. i can sit back in the stand and relax and reflect on things.
This. I couldn't have said it better myself.

As a father of 3 i enjoy the silence

The peace and tranquility of the great outdoors is number one for me.
Number two is the thrill/anticipation/possibility of seeing something you've only dreamt about, like two mature bucks battling over a braud or a hawk swooping down and catching a rabbit or any number of other things that you can only experience in the wilderness.
There isn't as much camaraderie with my crew when it comes to deer hunting because we hunt where we live and we rarely congregate afterwards unless it is a holiday or someone kills one. Dove hunting and fishing is where we do our bullshitting and there's plenty of it to go around

I don't deer hunt much at all, but if I went out every time with your mindset I would have to buy two more deep freezers.
