Can’t shoot this in my club cause we’re 6pt or better. Cant tell if he’s 1 1/2 or 2 1/2. He looks like a solid 150lbs.

Deer in Kansas will be bigger but the characteristics are the same.

He has no sway back. It looks like he is standing with his shoulders down hill. Look at how the feeder is leaning the same way. He has a a thin neck and shoulders.

Also, you are just throwing out buzz words. Deer will not have a sway back or sagging belly until 4.5 or 5.5 years old.

It all depend what property a person is hunting. Cull is a term used way too much by people that just want to kill a buck before it reaches full potential. I think most would agree that a 2 1/2 + year old spike 3 point could be a cull. But I’ve been to a place where hunters would “cull” 4 1/2 year old BIG 8 points because they weren’t 10’s. Cull is a very generic word.

I’ve always been told by geneticists that you shouldn’t determine the fate of a cull until he’s 3-1/2

I'm no expert on the subject but I watched my brother in law take a deer herd from laughable to enviable in a matter of a few years. The first deer they culled were does. Once they got the number of does down to what they thought was reasonable they started shooting any buck that looked like it did not have the genetics they were looking for. A two year old or older, skinny necked, small bodied spike was history. A 2.5 year old 6 point with no brow tines was history. I guess the easiest way to explain what they did, was that they preserved the bucks they wanted and shot everything else. They wanted big bodied bucks, with well formed racks, that had decent mass for their age. If a buck was not one of the chosen few, it died. Thinning the herd and providing high protein feed transformed that ranch into what I would call a poor man's trophy ranch.

One other thing. They owned this ranch and did not lease. So the first couple of years they let lots of friends come on the ranch and take deer. Otherwise it would have taken a lot longer to get the herd right. They would tell you what deer you were probably going to see at a given stand and which ones were off limits.

Probably some truth to this but it's not crazy to think that a 2.5 yr old spike is on the lower end of the genetics pool

Would y’all consider this deer a cull. I let him walk this past weekend due to him only being 3 1/2 and we try and only shoot 4 year olds. This deer was debated pretty heavily whether we should shoot him due to him only being a 6 point.

No such thing IMO. There are inferior genetics, but on the hoof, that’s hard to tell. All bucks should be judged by age. If it 4 and little, kill it.

I’d probably shoot that. It’s not a deer that you want breeding in your herd.

I would not consider that a full at all. He may only get to an 8 but he could be a good one.

I also think he looks like a 2.5 to me. IMHO

Eta-if he happens to be 2.5, he could be a REALLY good 3.5 year old
