I try to pass on anything less than 4.5 years old. Back in Arkansas this year I killed a lifelong spike with eye guards. I have been trying to kill him for at least the last four years, so I knew he was old. It turns out by his teeth; he was a 9.5 -10-year-old deer. I harvested him last weekend and all of his teeth were gone, besides four front bottom teeth.

In Oklahoma, same story. Want mature bucks.

Target Bucks (any of these)

This isn’t really deer hunting, it’s deer deer killing.

Some of us hunt in the woods.

Last time I passed on a buck, I took out his family that was crossing the road behind him.

I don't either, and my host probably doesn't. Fortunately, his dad was one of the original purchasers. Interesting mix at those places.

Easiest hunting of my life is in the midwest big timber woods. A lot of people mistake "hard hunting" w/ just hunting on shitty managed tracts of land. All about how it's managed.

or me to shoot another buck it would have to be really exceptional and better than what I have on my wall in my study now - he was a 10-point but he had a couple if broken tines on his left. The experience of hunting him was unforgettable so it would not be easy to top. I don't have to shoot something just because it has horns.

Another reason is we don't like eating bucks. My wife and daughters like venison but they will not eat a buck and they can tell the difference when I tried to slip it past them.

I'm always looking for a good fat doe.

I am not a deer hunter so this is genuinely a curious question: Besides the fact that they taste better, why not let does walk and shoot smaller bucks?

My thought process here is that each doe can only have 1-3 fawns no matter how many bucks are present. On the contrary, one buck can impregnate multiple does. Would it not make more sense to let most does and big bucks walk and shoot the smaller bucks? That way the good genes get passed on to the most amount of does and increases the chances of getting more bigger bucks?

I am 100% sure I am missing a key piece of information that proves my theory wrong. Someone please educate me.

Most placed don't have a numbers problem. Age class and ratio are likely bigger problems at most places. The two places I have spent most time on never shot as many does as the biologist wanted and it was somewhat frustrating.

Letting big bucks walk only works for so long as they just don't live that long. Shooting young bucks works against you on both the age class problem and the ratio problem.

I just looked it up and I am surprised that deer only live 4-6 years. For some reason I thought they lived like 10+ and if I was pressed I would have guessed 20 years.

The numbers thing makes a ton of sense.

You want to have a balanced herd. If you keep shooting all your 1 and 2 year old bucks for a few years, you will be wondering where all your mature bucks are
