If you are going to use the tools everyday in your profession than Dewalt, Makita, or Milwaukee would be the way to go. If you are just a weekend warrior or family handyman than Ryobi will be fine. A lot of people on TD (this board and the OT) like to bad-mouth Ryobi but I'm very happy with the Ryobi set I bought right after Katrina. I am not a professional but I use my tools a lot. One thing that I like about Ryobi is that about seven years ago they came out with a new and improved battery that fit all of my old Ryobi tools. Now they have another newer and more improved battery and it still fits all my old tools. A lot of manufacturers don't do that. A lot of manufacturers would have just made the old tools obsolete. I originally bought a ten piece set thirteen years ago. I now have over twenty Ryobi tools that all use the same batteries. I plan to buy even more.
I couldn’t have said it better. I’m not a professional, but do use my tools often. The one thing that I really like about the ryobi drill is that it has a magnet to hold screws on the base which I find I use all the time. Plus the just have a huge assortment of stuff compared to everyone else.

DeWalt. They seem to do the job for me. The circular saw, however, seems underpowered when cutting into untreated lumber IMHO.

I JUST bought the Milwaukee M12 Fuels. I was going back and forth between them and the Makita XLV subcompact 18 volt but opted for the Milwaukees because they have more tools that fit the M12 platform than Makita has on the 18 volt subcompact.
It’s not too late to return them. Makita sub compact is the best out there.
What tools do you need that makita doesn’t offer?

Dewalt. Pretty much all I buy.

I still have a older Craftsman drill that was given to me as a gift ten or so years ago. It still works ok, but I plan to upgrade soon. I'm thinking I'll probably try to catch a Ryobi set on sale. Probably the one with the Drill, Driver, Circular Saw, Reciprocating Saw, and Light. I was initially going to shell out the money for Dewalt or something similar, but I'm just a at home tinkerer so I don't think I need to spend that much money.

I have a few Milwaukee M12 tools.
Love the brush less impact driver and hammer drill.
Also have the M12 3/8 battery ratchet. Such an awesome tool to have.
Have a Ryobi 1/2 impact wrench also. Great for car lug nuts, bigger bolts, etc. This tool had a much better price point per ft lbs of torque than the Milwaukee version.
