In the thread about Punt guns Choup brought up the book Chesapeake and about how its a must read for waterfowlers which got me interested. What are some similar books the OB would recommend?

Yea I have read all those, I guess I should have clarified, besides all the typical books one reads in school. ie Gary Paulsen books, hatchet series, etc.

Undaunted Courage about the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

For fiction check out the Joe Pickett novels by C.J. Box. Its follows a game warden out in Wyoming.

Can't speak to American Buffalo or The Big Burn yet, but the other 3 are musts. Sand County is probably one of the most influential books on conservation.

In Defense of Hunting is a great book that I'm reading now.

If you are interested in Roosevelt, Wilderness Warrior is long but absolutely fantastic. Not only does it go in depth about Teddy, but the impact his family had on New England conservation is incredibly well documented.

Monster of God, Song of the Dodo, and The Flight of the Iguana. All books by David Quammen. MoG and SotD are lengthy, but great. MoG chronicles the relationship of different peoples to large, man-eating predators. SotD is about extinctions and island biogeography. TFotI is a compilation of essays that Quammen has written over the years.

Wildlife in Transition. The story of wolf reintroduction in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

Illumination in the Flatwoods. Turkeys.

The light in High Places. Mule deer.

I have an ever-growing collection of outdoor books that occupies it's own bookshelf.

Yes, I have a problem.

You ever read The River of Doubt?
After Roosevelt lost his bid for a third term as President he took a trip down the Amazon with his son. He almost died on this trip. Really good read. Cannot imagine any recent Presidents even attempting a trip like this.

Not yet, but it's on the list, along with "Hunting trips of a Ranchman and The Wilderness Hunter".

Wilderness Warrior discussed part of that trip, but it wasn't a real account of it.

Anything Roosevelt interests me. The first real conservationist president. A bird lover. And just so happens to be a distant ancestor.
