Debating swapping out the surface drive for a water cooled outboard... at some point. More quiet ride and probably more fuel efficient. Plus more access to NWR areas.

Anybody done this or something similar? Would you recommend it or say nah? I don't know much about physics or boat design so I don't know if it would be a bad idea to out an outboard on a prodrive boat for whatever reason.

TIA

Should work just fine as long as the transom height is right.

It will work fine but that smooth bottomed boat wont handle the turns like a chinned boat.

If your hull has a rolled chine, it will handle turns while running better than a typical flat bottom will. I have a rolled chine mud boat with an outboard and it turns corners while running like a v-hull boat. The drawback is while idling and reversing control is a bit of an issue due to the boat sliding.

The outboard is way more fuel efficient for sure.

Not a pro drive boat but I have been In several go devil boats that are the same style and they did fine. As others have said transome height is going to be an issue you may need a jack plate.
Another thing to consider is width and weight of the boat. Most shallow drive style boats are more narrow and heavier than a conventional flat boats and will require a higher HP motor than you would get away with on a conventional flat boat. My 16ft extra wide open hull flat with a 40hp would run circles around my buddies 16ft go devil hull with a 50hp.

I had a 18ft Prodrive boat with a Mercury 60 4-stroke. It ran great. Max speed 38 mph. Didn't slide as long as you throttle down and lean into sharp turns.

Yep. Had a 40 Yam 2-Stroke on a PD 17 footer and did just fine. Like dude above said just don't take a sharp turn WAO.

Have two friends that did this. One had a yam 50 other merc 90, both two strokes. Neither had complaints.

Really helpful. I use my boat primarily for ducks in SELA and I've been debating the switch for a while. Currently run a 17ft Prodrive with the 25hp on it. I love it but it's time for more speed. The question now is whether to upgrade to the 40hp or switch over to a water cooled outboard altogether. Pros and cons to both I suppose.

Appreciate the help guys.

If you decide to go with the outboard engine, put a screen on your water intake if you plan on going through lots of vegetation.

Def pro's and con's for both. If you setup an outboard correctly it will go MOST places a mudboat/motor will go. By correctly, I mean on a jack plate with a built in breakaway. Also, going away from the mudboat will mean going to a lighter hull and faster speeds with better handling. Lighter boat also helps out in the event you do stick it.

Put a 90 Merc on it. Put a bigger pisser on it and a Hydro Jack plate. You won’t be upset trust me!

Should work just fine. A jack plate will solve any transom height issues.
