How do I choose from all of the different lowers??
Since this will be my first, I am going to do it cheap as a test run.

Pick the one in the price point you like and has the looks you want. it doesnt really matter for the most part

Can you buy lowers at a gun show? We have a show coming up in Kenner next weekend?

You should be able to. For a cheap lower, I like the Anderson. They can be found in the $40 range. I'm probably going to stop on my way home from work today and pick up another one.

I based my build on an Anderson lower. Good to go, no problems with fit, finish, or functionality. Cheap, too.

Built my rifle for under $700. sans optics. Came with the full length hand rail, magpul furniture, Nickle Boron bcg.
The lower is PSA's lower with just a regular build kit in it.
I've sent no less than 2000 rounds through it and it's been a solid performer.

Thinking about purchasing the Magpul UBR stock.

Lowers are lowers. A $40 Anderson is just as good as a $200 high name brand.

I've been looking at the palmettostatearmory lowers for a while. I would recommend a reciever marked multi caliber, this gives you more options for uppers.

Nice stock, built like a tank. However because of this, that SOB is heavy. Just a heads up if you've never handled one.

While you are mostly correct, this is bad advice for a first time builder with no knowledge or experience with the platform.

OP, there are tons of options out there and it can be overwhelming at times. 90% of lowers are forged by a select few manufacturers and then coated/branded by the namesake company.

There are 3 main types of lower: Forged, Billet, and Polymer. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Read up on sites like AR15.com.

As a rule of thumb, read up on product reviews and company reputation (fit/finish/customer service) before you decide what to buy.

There is a lot more to write on the subject, but do your research and you'll be fine.

I would still stick with a mil-spec, forged aluminum 7075-T6 stripped lower (if building up from a stripped) or the least expensive complete lower that meets your other needs from a place like PSA.

Honestly - with a "build" if you're starting with a complete lower, you're really just "assembling" a rifle, unless you're going to customize heavily before assembly or barrel your own upper, etc.

So, I would go ahead and get a stripped one to go through the exercise of it - keeping in mind, unless you're a Nazi about waiting and catching things on sale, you're probably not going to come out much cheaper than getting a M&P Sport or Ruger AR556 at your LGS (or Academy).

A stripped lower is just a block of aluminum (or polymer, I guess) - and everything else fits into it - as long as it holds everything together, it is literally the least expensive, least important part of the entire build, possibly excepting the springs and pins for the lower.

Why would this be any different than a lower marked .223/5.56?

My .300 blackout and 6.8 spc are both on 5.56 lowers.

If you do go Anderson get the one with the built in trigger guard (unless you plan on shooting in mittens). Without having to install the trigger guard it eliminates the one part of a lower build that has the highest probability of damaging the lower.
