Yeah, I didn't know that either. But now that I think about it, we were in the Keys last time I caught some Bluefins. Cut them up and had sushi right there on the boat

Eta: might've been yellowfins....can't really remember, it's been a while

I generally like sushi, but something about warm sushi without any type of sauce whatsoever just wasn't very appealing to me

I've eaten Tuna, Red Snapper, and Grouper freshly caught/shot

Just add a little soy sauce and you're having a gourmet snack!

Bluefin Regulations

If you read this, it is legal to catch a bluefin incidentally, you can not "target" the bluefin, so long as a yellowfin is around it seems legal

Agree. Try fresh wahoo raw! That and tuna are my fav fresh off the hook.

To the OP - I know that keeping a bluefin would have been illegal, but I dang sure would have tried to catch one, get it to the side of the boat for pictures and cutting the line! Thats the catch of a lifetime!

Also wonder why they didn't stick that goPro under water???

2012 Recreational Atlantic Tunas Retention Limits

Effective April 7, 2012, the daily retention limit that applies to Charter/Headboat vessels (when fishing recreationally) will be one school BFT (measuring 27 to less than 47 inches) AND one large school/small medium BFT (measuring 47 to less than 73 inches) per vessel per day/trip. For Angling category (private) vessels, the limit is maintained at the default level of one school, large school, or small medium BFT per vessel per day/trip, (i.e., one fish measuring 27 to less than 73 inches). In addition to the daily retention limit, vessels are also allowed one ‘trophy’ BFT, measuring 73" or greater/vessel/year. These BFT retention limits are effective for all areas, except for the Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf of Mexico is designated as a spawning ground for BFT and therefore NMFS does not allow recreational caught BFT to be retained while fishing in this area. The recreational yellowfin tuna daily retention limit is 3 yellowfin/person/day/trip. The minimum size for yellowfin and bigeye tuna is 27" curved fork length. There are no recreational limits for bigeye, skipjack or albacore tunas.

So I guess you can incidentally catch one but can not keep it.
