My wife called me this morning and told me her 8 mo old miniature schnauzer had paralysis in her back legs. I'm out of town so told her to take her to the vet immediately and take one of my blank checks that I left her. The point of this is how much am I looking to pay? Also, how much have you ever paid at the vet?

Update: my wife called me and turns out a tick bit her and had an infection. Said its very rare, and could get into the respiratory system, but doesn't believe so because she got to the vet so quickly. $90 for a shot and antibiotics, and should be better by today.

Update 2: my wife's dog is up and moving. To the vet thanks for not breaking the bank!

It would be cheaper just to get a new dog.

probably more than what a judge would cost you.

both would remedy the situation.

I'm afraid you're about to get a second mortgage on your house to pay for this one.

Vet will likely do some xrays and shite and try some anti-inflammatory pills to relieve whatever swelling or pressure thats going on near the spine to cause this.

Thats what happened with my weiner dog. Pills didnt work and vet said either 3k surgery that may work or some pills to help with pain. We went with the pills for a few months till I could stand to see the dog miserable anymore and had him put down

I think they usually charge about $40 for euthanization.

I think I would have a better chance of getting euthanized before the dog does

Glad it was just something simple and hope everything works out.

My neighbor is a veteranary surgeon. All he does is surgery and a lot of back surgeries. He's apparently one of the best at it.

His office charges over $2k for a back surgery from start to finish.

Vet bill are getting rediculous though. We had a cat get sick a few weeks ago and the Vet charged us over $400 to tell us that she didn't know what it was. Ended up having to put the cat to sleep.

My dog was diagnosed with IMHA in May and we had to take her to LSU Vet Hospital for a blood transfusion. Well she had to stay in ICU for 5 days and went thru 5 blood transfusions and on the 5th day we had to put her down. She was like a daughter to me and couldn't give up on her. We did everything we could for her. TOTAL COST= $3,500... and it was worth every penny of it!

My thought is whatever I can buy a new dog for that looks like the old dog...than thats the budget...

my wife and kids don't have this belief so its whatever it takes to keep a "family member" alive...

almost 600.00 is the most I have spent...could have bought 2 dogs for that price...

Vets are a rip off.

For example do some research on heart worm medication.

*Hint* you can protect your dogs 100% from heartworm with a dose or two of Ivermectin (bought over the counter at a farmer's co-op, etc) during the warm months.

"Heartgaard" costs about $100 for a 3 month supply.

Tropical fish is the way to go..

You can name them, talk to them, feed them. love them.

When they get too noisy just turn off the light and close the door.

When they get sick. take them for an ambulance ride to the bathroom and flush.

You can often replace them with and almost identical specimen and the kids will never know...

Win/win

Just dropped $271 this morning.

That was for blood work, flee/tick meds, poop check, skin check, tapeworm pill, and some kind of med for a skin mite.
