Venomous snake-bitten dog

Our dog returned home this afternoon after receiving an unknown venomous snake bite. She had substantial swelling on her muzzle.
I have heard that dogs can withstand snake bites but is this just an old wive’s tale?
Any advice for us? North central Louisiana
ETA: 65 lb female mutt: 2 years old

1mg/lb benedryl every 12 hours, call your vet

My lab got bit several times. Keep her full of Benadryl and best to keep her from getting overheated.

I've heard of dogs being bitten many times over their lives and always recovering.

Vet said Benadryl at this referenced dosage, monitor over night, and check back in the morning.
The bite area is now turning black which he said indicates a copperhead.

You may want to contact your vet, not sure how many frequent the Outdoor Board...

All depends on amount of venom injected which can’t be assessed by looking at bite. My recommendation would be see an emergency vet. They can check coagulation times and if prolonged your dog would benefit from antivenin. Some dogs receive dry bites from a warning strike which are often not life threatening. Some dogs try to kill the snake and get multiple bites and a large dose of venom. I have seen dogs live from diamondback bites and I have seen a dog die from a Pygmy rattler. If you can afford the visit and antivenin i would see a vet. If you want to roll the dice and do nothing then it’s your call but snake bites can kill.

Unless it's a small dog or a small snake, they'll be fine.
And next time it will matter less.
And less the time after that.
Our shepherds when I was young would get bit a few times a summer. They hated snakes. The youngest to die made it to 13 or so. Oldest hit 17 years out of what can only be called pure spite

My 60 lb goldendoodle got bit by a rattlesnake. He needed 3 viles of antivenom to survive.
Depends on the type of snake. Dogs don't do well with rattlesnakes.

How much did that cost?

I had a chocolate lab that was a snake catching machine. He would get so excited if he winded one so I would give Him the command. One day he comes out the bushes with a moccasin in his mouth and the snake is biting him multiple times in the face and mouth. I rushed him to the vet about 20 minutes away. By the time I get there the dogs head is swoll something awful. I get the call the next day to pick him up no worse for wear.

$1,400.
Eta: he was dripping blood like a faucet. I bought his goofy arse a dog toy snake the next week. He won't go near it. If something rattles he's gone

I've never heard of a dog not recovering from a snake bite by itself.

Benadryl is useless. Dog needs to see the vet. Only actual treatment is antivenom, Pain meds are indicated as well.
Make sure you take his collar off as the swelling can be severe and it can cut off his airway. Actual treatment info below.

The dog has stopped excessively drooling and swelling seems to have reduced a small amount.
She has her appetite as well.

I’d you can give her Benadryl then great. If not she’ll handle it. Had one as a kid got bit on her leg and muzzle. She went under the porch and stayed for days. We put water and food at the edge for her. After several days she came out and was good.

Not an old wives tale - My lab has been bitten 3 times by western diamondbacks in the face area...other than some swelling and pain and embarrassment on her part for doing it again she has always been fine. I have her vaccinated for snakes now because she will not leave them alone and she doesn't have the reaction now with the vaccine...still embarrassed though...she knows better, it is a guilty pleasure to frick with snakes.
It depends om your comfort and risk tolerance though - I know people with pointers who don't bother with vaccination and others who run to the vet everytime their dog is bit even when vacinnated. Most dogs get over it in day or two....mine never stopped hunting when snake bit...benedryl helps but it isn't required.

Is the dog still ok? I saw a ton of downvotes for anyone stating that all you needed to to was treat with Benadryl. Not sure if they were legit down voters or not ( as in they lost a dog due to lack of treatment).
But, I also had never known a dog to die from a snakebite and I have been around working dogs my entire life and have seen numerous snake bites on numerous breeds of dogs.
