Utah Mule Deer...

Deer season is rolling and after a few years of waiting I got an opportunity for a coveted landowner tag. Not inexpensive; but, the average wait is 9-12 years for a nonresident buck draw permit in Utah right now.
Fun hunt, lots of good quality bucks harvested from a 50,000+ acre ranch in Diamond Mountain. Saw dozens of bucks per day, many were actually still in velvet. The elk population is enormous too. Saw herds of 100 or more.
Spotted this fella bedded down in some sage brush yesterday. 300 yard shot; but, the Thompson Long Range 6.5-300 Weatherby did the job in some serious crosswinds.

Great buck. After hunting out west a few times I just can't get excited about hunting down here as much as I used to.

I get it, the variety of game plus the picturesque scenery makes for an amazing experience.

Nice score.
The NE corner of the state here is magnificent. They used to have a good population of Big Horn Sheep also. Some of the best fishing in the state up that way too.
Did you fly into SLC and drive out?

Beautiful deer. A Muley is definitely on my list.
I'm guessing the barrel life on that is pretty short?

The Rep from Weatherby says you can expect some barrel erosion after 2,000 rounds. At $5 a shot I go through less than a box a year. At that rate I’ll be dead before the gun wears out.
My complaint; if any, is it left no exit wound. The 127 gr Barnes X shattered upon entry. We found copper fragments throughout the chest.
It sure piled him up; but, it could make blood trailing difficult if you place a shot poorly.

Nice animal! If only Utah or Idaho had the ocean, I would move.

Nice! How much did it weigh?

That looks like a massive animal

Awesome score. On my 3rdyear of buying preference points in Wyoming for elk, care to share on the process for the landowner tag?

Wow that is a hot round. Probably sucks zeroing scopes in.
That thing has to fly like at dart with the BC of 6.5 at 3400 fps.
Sexy

Yep, about a four hour haul but through some pretty country.

In my limited experience landowner tags are virtually always connected to an outfitter. So there’s really no chance of buying a landowner tag and doing a DIY type hunt.
At the end of the day, the landowner knows their tag is worth some cash but the real money is in the outfitting. As it works out, many States require nonresidents to use an outfitter anyway so it’s sort of a push.
So if you wanna play the landowner tag game you are basically committing to a guided/outfitted hunt. They aren’t always expensive; but, in quality units like Utah they can cost a fortune. Landowner Bull elk tags in the unit I was in for my mule deer average $12,000 each.

Actually zeroing in was pretty easy. Zero in at 300 yards. Basically it’s point and hold from 0-300 yards. Only a matter of inches of elevation change over that range. Not enough to make a difference in the field.
The Thompson scope reticle is graduated for distances up to 1,000 yards. This particular gun put together a 12” Group at 1,000 and connected on a 24” target at 1,200 yards. From an ethical standpoint I wouldn’t stretch it beyond 700-800 yards. The lighter bullet just isn’t creating enough energy for big game hunting beyond that.
