Used truck prices - WOW

Anybody else notice that the prices on used trucks these days are ridiculous? I mean who in their right mind would pay $15K for an 2008 with 200k miles.
Any places y'all know of that I should be checking? Looking for something $12k -$15k with less than 125k miles.
Honestly, does it even make sense to purchase used these days with the low prices on some new trucks??

I was looking for a slightly use 4runner this time last year. The majority that were only a couple of years old and under 100K miles were only $4-$5k cheaper than new plus the higher interest rate on used. I just ended up buying new, but that's fine, I bought my last 4Runner new and drove it for 11 years and 250k

I've been looking lately as well. It's freaking ridiculous.

Always buy new
1- you dont want someone elses problem
2- you get better deals with the rebates and better interest rates
unless you are getting a one or 2 year old vehicle with 10-20k miles and come across a killer deal.
Dont waste your time trying to buy vehicles that are 10 yrs old with tons of miles unless its for a hunting truck or something. Just getting someone elses problem.

This has been a thing for 3 years or so
Makes it worse when they value your 2009 with 160k at under $10k

Brand specific?
Crew cab, ext cab or regular cab?
4x4 or 4x2?
Long bed or short bed?
Any other features you have to have (leather, back up camera, etc...)?
I would check cargurus.com and FB marketplace. Older Nissan Titans are probably the best bang for the buck in the used market.

2013 Nissan Titan SV Crew Cab, 112k - $13,995
ETA: I also know of a 2010 Silverado 1500 extended cab long bed 4x2 with under 110k miles that is listed for under $12k. If interested, lemme know. In BR.

Any decent CPA, economist, Financial advisor or kindergartener with good math skill will tell you never buy a new vehicle. The loss in immediate value is never reclaimed. A 2 to 3 vehicle is prefect on the curve of vehicle value when compared to the long term dollar loss of depreciation.
Bottom line a vehicles is a liability not an investment or asset and we must treat it as such when thinking about buying one. Its like a gallon of milk. IS it gonna go bad before we can drink it all? How much are we gonna lose versus buying the half gallon that we will use all of but have to pay a little more for.

I was in the market a little over a year ago. Wanted a 2-4 year old 4x4 truck with 50k-75k miles. Everything I found used was in the $28k-35k price range. I ended up buying a brand new one with year end close out incentives for $31k. I looked for several months and could not find a used one worth buying. I still don’t know who in the heck is paying these used prices. When I went to sell my old truck (13 years old with 190k miles) I accepted an offer right at kbb value, then before we could finalize paperwork I had guys calling offering over kbb and my asking price if I would sell it to them instead!
For the record, I had already shook the first buyers hand and told him we had a deal so I declined the other offers and sold at the original agreed upon price. The whole experience still baffles me.

In 08 I bought a bought a brand new GMC Sierra for $24000. Paid it off in 4 years, I feel like I got my money out of it.
Nothing rides better than a paid off truck

The problem is that all the dealerships use the MSRP on their used vehicles. So then everyone looks at those in comparison. That's why people are paying $38k for a F150 XLT and trying to sell it used for $34k in 2 years, when MSRP is like $40k. Well there are people paying $32k new for them.
But yeah, I don't understand who is paying $15k for a Tundra with 200k miles. Its laughable.

This was my thought exactly when I started the whole buying process, but it didn’t add up this time. I brought a brand new truck, and a year and 30k miles later it still had nada and kbb values equal to what I originally paid. My head hurts trying to make sense of it.

Buy new, drive it until it is costing more than $2000 a year in repairs, then buy a new one.
Itll be 25 years old by then if it ever gets to the point at all.

As a rule, that’s true. But as with any rule there are exceptions. A brand new truck with great warranty at 31K is a better value than a used truck with 30K miles (and therefore less warranty) for 28K and I’d argue that all day long. You still need to make it make sense financially but this isn’t always a hard and fast rule that it used to be given the used market.
As evidenced by the used prices these things are holding their values. Take a look at the residual values on truck leases right now - many in the 60% range after THREE years. And that’s what the bank says it’ll be worth. New trucks aren’t the exponentially depreciating assets they used to be. My .02.

don't worry about what that KBB NADA book is telling you. That's feel good mess. Go try to trade it in and tell me what happens. Yes selling out right is the ideal method. But lets be reasonable that rarely happens on 2-3 year old trucks sitting at the local 7-11 with a sign on it. The dealership knows this and devalues the hell out of your vehicle on a trade to boost there profit on the backend and assume the risk of it sitting there long enough to force a tax payment on it. Man its an exact science don't be fooled by what you see. Its what you don't see in the vehicle business that gets ya.

Most dealerships are fricking nuts, and don't mind sitting on used vehicles anymore for some reason. Just search around more. You just have to be willing to put in the work.
FWIW, I passed up my exact truck at a dealership in BR for $21k (which they wouldn't budge), and drove to Houston and bought mine for $13.5k. That truck sat on the lot in BR for five months before they got rid of it

Not brand specific
crew cab pref
4x2 is fine

Honestly just looking for a basic truck and that's the real problem with paying these stupid prices.
